Growth potential for hair transplants in Asia is big and this has prompted Japan-based company Toshka Holdings to expand its reach to Singapore.

Toshka's executive chairman and chief executive officer Nobuo Morishita (picture) believes younger Asians are likely to suffer hair loss in the next few years as a result of changing lifestyles and environmental influences in the region.

Japan's hair loss industry is projected to grow to $7.23 billion in 2012. In Korea, this figure is estimated to reach $4.34 billion.

Singapore is expected to mirror these figures, said Mr Morishita.

Toshka was founded in Japan back in 2003. In 2005, it inked its first consultancy contract with Realmore Clinic in Korea, followed by Motion Clinic in 2007.

Last year, the company signed a joint-venture agreement with ASG to run a hair transplant clinic at Paragon Medical Tower. Currently, the company is in the period of training and testing in Singapore and expects to launch its operations in the next few months.

The hair transplant, however, would come at a hefty price of $6,000.

And it would require some effort to educate patients on the cost-effectiveness of undergoing hair transplants instead of using wigs and other hair loss products.

But beyond vanity, Mr Morishita said their strong track record in Japan and Korea, plus their proprietary hair transplant machine and methods, will allow them to be competitive in Singapore.

For many women, unexplained hair loss can take a significant psychological toll on their overall quality of life. From altering their hairstyle to hide a thinning part to scaling back their hair care regimen in an effort to halt further hair loss, women try countless ways to cover up this problem - and the results are often lukewarm at best. A better option is to see a dermatologist, a physician trained in the care of skin, hair and nails, who can diagnose and, in many cases, successfully treat hair loss in women.

Speaking today at the 68th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), dermatologist Mary Gail Mercurio, MD, FAAD, associate professor of dermatology and program director of dermatology residency at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y., discussed common forms of hair loss in women and available treatment options.

"In the past, many women experiencing hair loss would suffer in silence, not knowing where to turn for help and trying their best to hide the problem," said Dr. Mercurio. "But now, I see more and more women in my practice seeking treatment for hair loss and actively addressing this condition. That's encouraging, as the sooner hair loss is diagnosed, the better our chances of successfully treating it."

The most common form of hair loss in women is female-pattern hair loss, which usually has a strong genetic component that can be inherited from either the mother or father. Also referred to as androgenetic alopecia, this type of hair loss can start as early as the late teens - and the earlier it starts, the more severe the hair loss tends to be.

While pattern hair loss affects both men and women, it is very different in women. For example, female-pattern hair loss is not characterized by a receding hairline or bald spot on top of the scalp as is common in men. In women, the frontal hairline is usually maintained, but there is visible thinning over the crown. In addition, in both men and women, hairs are miniaturized due to a shortened growth cycle where the hair stays on the head for a shorter period of time. These wispy hairs, which resemble forearm hairs, do not achieve their usual length.

For all the stories about how handsome and charming Prince William was throughout his recent Australian tour, it seems that his increasing bald spot attracted more than a fair share of comment.

There were articles in major newspapers headed ‘Balding Royals’, it was discussed on numerous radio chat shows and there’s now even a t-shirt being sold featuring a photo of Prince William with the caption ‘Advanced Heir. Yeah Yeah!’

The wording is a play on Advanced Hair Studio adverts, which show balding cricket aces - including Shane Warne, 40 - and the line: "Advanced Hair. Yeah! Yeah!"

So why is it that hair loss is such a talking point when it happens to celebrities, sports stars and now it appears royalty?

Is it that society sees them as being less attractive when they start to go bald? The answer is probably ‘yes’.

Women who took a drug to fight breast cancer say they were never warned of a side effect permanent hair loss that left them looking sick long after they were treated for the disease.

I had a normal head of hair and I am now completely bald, said Cynthia MacGregor, 50, of Montreal, who has been diagnosed with alopecia universalis, a loss of all body hair.

Another sufferer, Shirley Ledlie, 51, of Brittany, France, said: It's like having ‘I am a cancer sufferer' tattooed on your forehead. I look like an 80-year-old, ugly old man.

This lasting side effect of the chemotherapy drug Taxotere, in combination with other drugs, came to light when cancer patients began living longer. These women are now finding that survival comes at a cost.

Balding women from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and France are calling themselves the Taxotears. They include one Taxoterrorist, the nickname for Ms. Ledlie, who posted pictures of her balding head on the Facebook page of the pharmaceutical company.

We want every woman who's been offered Taxotere to know it is a possibility, so it is her choice whether to take the risk or not, Ms. Ledlie said.

In Canada, about 10,000 patients, including an estimated 6,500 with breast cancer, were treated with Taxotere last year, according to Claudette Baltayan, manager of product communications for Sanofi-Aventis Canada Inc., the drug's manufacturer.

Hair regeneration clinical study

Aderans Research Institute Inc. (ARI) recently achieved a significant milestone in its Phase 2 clinical study of cell-based hair regeneration, treating the trial’s 100th subject. With clinical sites expected to double in the coming months, the study will likely add dozens of additional subjects to its enrollment.

The breadth of this phase of our trial is tremendous, said Kurt Stenn, MD, Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer. We have significantly more participants than our Phase 1 study. The improved quantity of our study group allows us to assess our cell-products and accelerate our efforts to truly understand the impact of cell regeneration on pattern hair loss.

Phase 2 of the study has thus far been conducted in eight cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Paramus, Raleigh, Houston, and Washington DC. The study will ultimately comprise at least 16 U.S. metropolitan areas, with numerous new cities expected to be added in the coming months.

The second phase of the trial is testing a variety of treatment regimens designed to realize a unique autologous cell engineering solution to hair regeneration. During the treatment, a small section of hair-bearing tissue is removed, cells are extracted and cultivated in a controlled laboratory setting, and then reintroduced to the scalp, where they are expected to elicit new hair growth.

Study indicates Finasteride therapy may benefit women suffering from hair loss

Molecular dermatology research and development innovator HairDX today announced the results of a six month pilot study that presents, for the first time, evidence that genetic mechanisms may predict treatment response to Finasteride for postmenopausal female Androgenetic Alopecia (female hair loss).

The double-blinded placebo study followed a small cohort of postmenopausal female patients suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia for a period of six months. Using a genetic technique patented by HairDX, we were able to identify women that benefited from Finasteride by experiencing a significant increase in hair counts.

While Finasteride therapy in men has proven very effective in treating Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness), there have been frustratingly few therapies for the treatment of hair loss in women.

Results of our pilot study are very encouraging, as it appears we have found a key piece of the genetic puzzle which identifies women who can benefit from Finasteride therapy in the same way men do.

Hair extensions should be banned

Hair extensions should be banned, according to one of the biggest hair science groups in the UK.

The Trichological Society says a growing number of salons are offering to do them at a cheap price and some hairdressers don't have the qualifications to put them in properly.

The organisation says that's leading to more young women suffering from hair problems such as bald patches and alopecia.

Barry Stevens is a hair scientist who runs the group.

He said: "People who have hair extensions usually have high hopes they'll look and feel good but very often it ends in tears.

"There can be quite serious consequences wearing them for a long period. They are capable of destroying hair permanently."

A report published in the British Journal of Dermatology also warns people about the possible dangers of hair extensions.

Researchers in the US and Italy say problems with them are more common than reported.

Scott Boden, M.D., a board certified hair transplant surgeon with the Hair Restoration Center of Connecticut, donated his services to remove a scar and transplant hair on the scalp of a woman who recently fought cancer.

As a result of radiation treatments to treat ringworm as a young girl a common form of treatment in the early 1940’s - the patient developed skin cancer later in life. She had numerous basal cell cancer lesions on her scalp that were removed, but the procedure left her with a scar and hair no longer grew in the area. While joyous about overcoming cancer, she was self conscious about her scalp.

Dr. Boden performed a modified scalp reduction, removed the scar tissue and transplanted hair to the area. By removing the scar tissue, Dr. Boden was able to produce the most natural looking results with the hair transplant.

Beating cancer is a blessing, but when a patient looks in the mirror and sees signs of this battle, it’s a constant reminder, said Boden. I don’t want financial means to stand in the way of self consciousness.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Hair Club of New England has commissioned a survey to gauge how important hair loss is when it comes to dating and relationships.

Considering the fact that it provides hair loss treatments, the findings are a bit of a mixed bag for the company in terms of measuring the demand for its services.

Sure, there’s the one stat that shows nearly 24 percent of respondents turned down an opportunity to date a guy because he appeared to be losing his hair. It’s enough to make any single dude reach for the Rogaine.

But it’s worth noting that means the majority of women don’t recall ever rejecting a man because of how much hair he didn’t have. And the survey found that half of the respondents say it’s not very important to them that their romantic partner have a full head of hair.

Hair loss has always been a top cosmetic concern for men of all ages, but it's only in recent years that proven medical options have become available and surgical techniques have been refined to produce remarkable results. This means real hope for men who are concerned about balding; But it's important to have a realistic understanding of the options and what they can achieve.

One is surgical-surgical hair restoration, a hair transplant. The other is medical. And we only have two drugs. We have Rogaine, or minoxidil, a liquid you rub on your head, and Propecia, a pill you take once a day. These are the options.

Hair loss is not a process where you go from having hair to being bald. What happens is the hair goes through a process of miniaturization where it gradually gets thinner and shorter, and medication can reverse that process. It can take very fine hair, which really doesn't have much cosmetic benefit, and then make it a full, thick hair.

Rogaine and Propecia are specifically indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, the common, inherited type of hair loss that is by far overwhelmingly the majority-what the majority of patients have. There is, I think, a misconception that, well, they only work if you're losing your hair in the back. They don't work in the middle or in the front, along the frontal hairline. LaserCombs are a relatively new class of product designed to fight hair loss combining a brush with a special light source. They’re sold online in the UK with the marketing information saying they are “FDA approved meaning the US health regulator has cleared them for use.

There’s no mention of them being UK approved, which is because they are not classed as health products here.

They are sold online in the UK for around £350, with promises of increased hair growth, cessation of hair loss, faster growing hair, more manageability and more vibrant colour.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says the devices do not fall under its remit.

Jennifer Kyne from the MHRA told us by email, Whether or not a specific product would be a medical device under Directive 93/42/EEC would depend on the claims being made for each individual product by its manufacturer. ’Hair loss' or 'balding' is not regarded as being a medical condition and therefore products which claim to treat such problems will not be medical devices and would not require CE marking as such.

It should also be noted that the regulations in the USA are not the same as those in the EU and just because something has been FDA approved does not mean that it is a medical device under EU regulations.

Forty percent of married Americans would rather their spouse be overweight than bald and 45 percent try to hide thinning hair, a U.S. survey indicates.

The survey of 1,001 U.S. adults, conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Rogaine, an over-the-counter brand-name version of minoxidil made by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary McNeil-PPC Inc. that promotes hair regrowth, also says 57 percent say they are not physically attracted to people with thinning hair.

Seventy-five percent of Americans incorrectly cite stress as a leading cause of hair loss, while 35 percent say frequently wearing a hat thins hair and 24 percent blame over-styling of hair.

"What people don't always know is that hereditary hair loss accounts for 95 percent of all hair loss, and can affect men as early as their late teens and early 20s," Dr. Robert Leonard, founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates and member of the board of governors for the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, said in a statement. If the child is right-handed the baldness will tend to be greater on the right side of the head. It usually stops with the knowledge that one is pulling out one's own hair, but nervous" twiddling" of hair carries on throughout life in some individuals.

In older people, this habit can persist throughout the rest of their life, even though large areas of baldness can occur. In some cases psychiatric care may be required.

If you pluck a hair out of your head you are not actually pulling it out by the roots. The little bulb at the end is not the hair root. To pull your hair out by the roots would be extremely painful and your scalp would be bleeding badly, and more than likely you would pass out.

A survey of over 355 women found surprising assumptions of men with hair loss, ranging intelligence to buying habits.

The Zenagen shampoo poll, unofficially nicknamed the "Miley Cyrus Bald Guy Poll" asked a variety of questions including based on looks alone "which photographed man appears to be a good father. The winner: the photo of the man experiencing hair loss.

A follicularly-challenged man has sued Teva-Altman (no relation to Teva Pharmaceutical Industries) in a class-action suit on the alleged grounds that its hair restorative HRRoots doesn't work.

Teva-Altman falsely claims that using the nutrition additive HRRoots will stop hair loss, strengthen hair from the root, or even restore hair, says Ehud Nathan.
But the product's efficacy has never been proved by scientific studies as the company avers, he charges. If anything, taking the tablets can cause physical harm, the plaintiff adds.

He has filed his suit as a class-action motion that could set back the company by NIS 107 million.

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by discrete patches of nonscarring hair loss. AA often remits spontaneously, but lymphosuppressive and lymphotoxic treatments such as oral and intralesional corticosteroids facilitate hair regrowth in up to 60% of cases.[1] Oral corticosteroid use is limited by systemic toxicity, while intralesional corticosteroids are difficult to administer to large areas and may induce local skin atrophy.

Hanson and colleagues[2] recently noted that topical bexarotene, a synthetic retinoid specific for the retinoic acid X nuclear receptor, yielded significant hair regrowth when used to treat patients with follicular mucinosis or folliculotropic mycosis fungoides. They postulated that this effect may be caused -- at least in part -- by bexarotene’s ability to induce T-cell apoptosis[3] and theorized that topical bexarotene may also induce hair regrowth in AA.

An arcade game that allows people to vent their anger at bankers has proved so popular the owner keeps having to replace worn out mallets.

Inventor Tim Hunkin introduced "Whack a Banker", which is based on the older "Whack a Mole" game, at his arcade on Southwold pier in Suffolk.

Instead of players hitting pop-up moles with a mallet, within a set time, the target is pop-up bald figures.

Mr Hunkin said the game was "proving very popular".

"I keep having to replace worn-out mallets," he said.

"The bankers are bald and all look the same because that's how I think people see bankers, as faceless."

Players, who are promised a "truly rewarding banking experience", pay 40p to hit as many bankers as they can in 30 seconds.

When a customer wins a voice says: "You win. We retire. Thank you very much to the taxpayer for paying our pensions."

NHS Chiefs spend £4 million on wigs

Bosses at NHS Scotland have given the approval to spend £4 million on wigs.

Four Scots companies have won the lucrative contract to supply the Scottish NHS with hairpieces, as well as wig cleaning and repair services.

The firms one based in Glasgow and three in the Capital will supply NHS Scotland with wigs for four years.

The contract, which has been published on the Scottish Government’s procurement website, describes the contract as being for the Supply of Wigs to NHS Scotland covering the range of custom made and stock human hair wigs, modacrylic wigs, wig repairs and cleaning & redressing of wigs.

Each firm was assessed according to strict criteria quality and cost of supply both worth 40% and delivery and service worth 10% each.

The wigs are supplied to NHS Scotland primarily to deal with patients losing their hair as a side-effect of powerful treatments.

A spokesman for National Services Scotland said: The main reason for getting wigs through the NHS is cancer, or treatment for alopecia.

Sex therapy doc jailed for hell of hair loss patient

An "alternative doctor" who sexually assaulted a female reporter seeking a cure for hair loss has been jailed for nine months.
Chan Tung-choi, a practitioner of natural therapy, yelled he was innocent as he was led away from Eastern Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Chan, 68, who denied four counts of indecent assault, was found guilty by Magistrate So Wai-tak. He said he would appeal.Earlier, the court heard how Chan fondled the private parts and breasts of a 28-year-old online journalist, who cannot be named, between late 2005 and October 2006 at his Sheung Wan clinic.

He told her such actions would help make her hair grow.

So, who said Chan had abused the patient's trust, called his acts obscene and berated him for taking advantage of a woman who was anxious about her hair loss by indecently assaulting her.

He added: "The woman put her trust in doctors. This kind of trust should not be abused. I have the duty to send this message out."

Pupil claims teacher caused baldness

A 12-year-old pupil who pulled out his hair until he was bald is suing his school, claiming a teacher's criticism caused his hair-pulling.

The family of the pupil, Xiao Yu, in the city of Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong province, wants the school to publicly apologize and pay 100,000 yuan($14,650) as medical and emotional compensation.

The family claims Xiao Yu could not help pulling his hair since he read an article by a teacher surnamed Xing on the school's online network in April 2008.

The article said Xiao was dishonest. Thereafter, Xiao started pulling his hair unconsciously under the pressure of the post.

Finally, he was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder by a local hospital.

North Koreas Kim raps foreign hairstyles

A campaign in communist North Korea against untidy and foreign hairstyles was launched on the orders of leader Kim Jong-Il, a South Korean welfare group says.

Official media in the isolated state said last month that men should keep their hair short and women should have it tied up.

"To keep your hair tidy and simple... is a very important matter for setting the ethos of a sound lifestyle in the country," ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun said at the time.

Seoul-based Good Friends, in its latest newsletter seen Wednesday, said the order came from Kim himself and was being enforced by the Central Youth Union Committee, a state body.

It quoted officials of the body as saying Kim took objection to what he saw as the foreign hairstyle of a female sales clerk.

"Is she really our own Korean woman? Why is she giving up our own traditional beauty and choosing to model bad foreign habits of the capitalist?" they quoted Kim as saying.

It was meant to be a night to remember, but Nazia Ahmed (name changed) would like to forget it soon. On the night she got married to Abdul Akhtar Hussain Sayyed, 27, Nazia found out that he was bald, something hidden from her till that point.

Nazia, a 25-year-old arts graduate from Mumbai University, married Abdul on Thursday, December 3, with the consent of elders. Nazia's mother, a widow, is teaching Arabic to locals in Agripada.

After the wedding, the newlyweds went to a south Mumbai hotel. On reaching the hotel, Abdul surprised Nazia by removing his wig and exposing his bald pate. A shocked Nazia stormed out of the hotel and rushed home.

A woman whose hair was falling out had her breasts and private parts fondled by an "alternative doctor" who claimed that doing so would make it grow back in, a court heard.

The woman, 28, said pressure of work as an online journalist had made her hair fall out.

The condition prompted her to seek Western, Chinese and even steroid treatment.

Then, through a priest she knew from university, she came to consult the accused, Chan Tung-choi, 68, who claimed he was an alternative medicine therapist.

Chan, who denies four counts of indecent assault, also claimed to have studied Western medicine in the United States.

Eastern Magistrates' Court heard that when the woman - who cannot be named for legal reasons - met Chan for the first time in his Sheung Wan clinic in September 2005, he persuaded her to buy a package of 10 massage treatments for HK$2,000.

A few months later, she said, during a massage in the middle of winter, Chan told her to strip off.

The stresses of modern life have left one in three women over the age of 25 suffering from hair loss, research has revealed.

Experts believe a major cause is society's obsession with being thin.

This leads women to eat less as they try to imitate the skinny frames of celebrities, which means they are not getting enough nutrients which, in turn, is causing their hair to thin or even fall out.

A survey found that 37 per cent of women have experienced hair loss to some degree, with serious thinning a problem for 4.8million women in the UK.

Researchers argue that because the phenomenon is regarded as something that happens only to women in old age, the hair loss itself is adding to stress levels, accelerating the process.

Almost all of the 3,000 women aged 25 and over who were polled said they would be ashamed to say they were losing their hair.

This is normally first noticed as a small bald patch on the scalp. Usually a number of patches in an area of the scalp develop and eventually join up to form larger patches. A patch can sometimes form overnight, so that the hairs that are shed are found on the pillow in the morning.

This can be a very frightening experience for someone when it happens for the first time. The skin in the patch is usually pale and glossy, with no hairs present. The hairs around the patch are usually short and of a frayed appearance that can easily be pulled out, which is the last thing that should be done.

The cause of alopecia areata is not fully understood by doctors. Some people have a family history that could suggest a genetic link. However stress and shock have been blamed as reasons for the problem, while very often there is just no explanation at all.

Often the hair regrows on its own accord after about a month, while at other times the bald patch will clear up completely only to move to another area of the scalp.

Medical advice should be sought as worrying about the condition can actually make it worse. Whilst there is no actual cure for the condition, just being reassured that you are not suffering from some major disease, will help ease the distress this problem can cause.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has become the latest follically challenged cricketer to sign up for an advertising campaign with the Advanced Hair Studio.

AHS has a record of treating cricketers and using them in advertising campaigns. Both Australia's Shane Warne and England's Graham Gooch have had their revamped pates featured in the company's ads.

An Alameda County, Calif., jury late last month returned a $50 million verdict in a class action that sought relief for Californians who'd bought Avacor, a hair-loss remedy that was marketed as an all-natural, clinically tested product.

Attorneys fees have yet to be decided, said L. Timothy Fisher, of Walnut Creek, Calif., firm Bramson, Plutzik, Mahler & Birkhaeuser. New York lawyer Scott Bursor and New York firm Faruqi & Faruqi also represented the plaintiffs.
There were about 150,000 purchases of Avacor in California during the class period, but since some were reorders, the exact size of the class is unclear, Fisher said.

The outcome against two defendants marked the second trial victory in the same class action for the plaintiff lawyers. The earlier trial had ended in a $40 million win against different defendants, but Fisher said the awards from the trials will not be added together, and he expects the court will order that $50 million in all be returned to the class.

NIH awards grant for cicatricial alopecia study

The National Institutes of Health has awarded Pratima Karnik, Ph.D., assistant professor of dermatology at Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University, a grant of $1.77 million to fund a five-year study titled PPAR-gamma Signaling in Normal Pilosebaceous Units and in Scarring Alopecia, reports the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation (CARF).

The study will continue research on linking a defect in lipid processing and peroxisome biogenesis to cicatricial alopecia.

The CARF statement quotes Dr. Karnik as saying, In preliminary studies that formed the basis of the NIH award, we provided insight into highly complex interactions between hair follicle cells and environmental factors that may cause cicatricial alopecia.

This funding provides us the support necessary to aggressively test novel ideas aimed at understanding progression of these diseases and the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

A woman's genes are much more likely than lifestyle factors such as stress or diet to cause greying hair, a study suggests.

Unilever scientists studied more than 200 identical and non-identical Danish twin sisters aged between 59 and 81.

The scientists found little difference between the greyness of the identical twins - who share the same genes.

But there was more difference between non-identical twins, whose genes differ, the study found.

The study, published in the journal PLoS One, also suggests receding hair is linked to mainly genetic factors.

But it indicates hair-thinning on the top of the head is connected to environmental and lifestyle factors.

Danny Salomon, vice president at United Holdings Group, has developed the dubious 'AntiAgeingApp,' which will sell at $2.99 on iTunes and is currently causing debate on the internet.

Low-level laser therapy, used in sports medicine, hair-loss treatment and skin care, can aggravate skin cancer, Norwegian and Brazilian scientists say.

Jan M. Bjordal from Bergen University College, Norway, worked with a team of Brazilian researchers to carry out experiments in the lab and in living organisms.

High irradiances (radiation) of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has gained increasing popularity as a treatment for soft tissue injuries and joint conditions, said Bjordal.

However, there is a shortage of evidence, especially in living organisms, about the effects of LLLT in malignant conditions such as melanoma.

LLLT was pioneered in the 1970s, when it was discovered that light from low-intensity lasers causes cells to proliferate more rapidly, said a Bergen release.

It is marketed as a treatment for hair-loss, pain management, sports medicine and skin care among many other things. Home-treatment sets are available online for unsupervised use.

The advert stated 'Hair worries are out!' alongside a picture of Warne, with the spin bowler stating: "'I stopped worrying about my hair when I heeded the Warne-ing signs and saw Advanced Hair Studio."

It promises readers laser therapy technology and "strand by strand" replacement procedures to treat thinning hair.

A series of four pictures also showed Gooch's scalp, before and after strand by strand treatment.

But a reader questioned whether the treatment could really cause hair to re-grow or stop hair loss and asked whether claims the laser therapy had received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration [FDA] were misleading.

Advanced Hair Studio (AHS) argued that the adverts offered two solutions to hair loss and said it had not meant to imply that the laser treatment reversed hair loss, but provided a cosmetic improvement.

The strand by strand treatment did result in a fuller head of hair and AHS had also consulted the Committee of Advertising Practice in advance of publishing the ad, it said.

However, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld two of the claims against the firm and warned that the adverts should not appear again.

A Chicago-based company that claims its combination of laser therapy and scalp treatments can regrow hair is being sued for allegedly making false statements based on unsubstantiated scientific claims.

Atty. Gen.Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court against Natural Hair Growth Institute, claiming the company has failed to provide consumers with full refunds for services that average between $8,000 and $12,000.

Manjit Singh, a 59-year-old security consultant from Leicester, England known as the "Ironman," on Thursday pulled a double-decker bus weighing more than eight tonnes over a distance of 21.2 meters with his hair.

The new record was set in central London to coincide with the fifth annual Guinness World Records Day, which organizers said prompted thousands of people around the world to set some bizarre benchmarks of their own.

For Singh, his latest achievement makes up for the disappointment of 2007, when he failed to break the record for the furthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with the ears.

Little evidence exists to guide treatment of alopecia areata (AA). The current practices in treatment of children compared to adults and of progressive stages of hair loss are unknown.

The objective of this study was to examine the current practices of southeastern United States dermatologists for the treatment of AA.

Methods:
Dermatologists were sent anonymous questionnaires regarding their treatment practices by mail. Respondents'frequencies of treatment in children compared to adults and in patchy hair loss compared to widespread hair loss were compared with Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests and Friedman tests.

As a secondary source, the National Alopecia Areata Registry (NAAR) database was analyzed for patients'treatment histories.

A foam formulation of the popular hair re-growth aid Rogaine is an effective treatment for hair loss in men and may be safer and easier to apply than the original liquid formulation, a researcher told Reuters Health.

Hairdressers are to receive more training to help cancer patients deal with hair loss and re-growth.

My New Hair - a charity set up by celebrity hairdresser Trevor Sorbie - has received a government grant to advise on wig styling and hair care.

The programme also aims to give NHS staff and patients better advice on hair loss, which is a common side-effect of cancer treatment.

Since 2006 the charity has trained 180 hairdressers in "wig styling".

A study published in 2008 found that hair-loss is one of the most distressing side effects of cancer treatment and can often limit people in getting their life back to normal, such as returning to work.

The Department of Health has provided £86,500 to extend the programme to include nurse-led training for hairdressers in "aftercare" for patients whose hair is starting to grow back.

Now keepers at the zoo have designed a special wetsuit for Ralph, the follicly challenged penguin.

They are worried that the Hampshire sunshine will be enough to burn the bald bird, even if the ‘barbecue summer’ promised for 2009 has been a washout.

Scientists identify gene that may explain hair loss

Researchers in Japan have identified a gene that appears to determine cyclical hair loss in mice and believe it may also be responsible for hair loss, or alopecia, in people.

In a report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists described how they generated a line of mice that were lacking in the Sox21 gene.

"The mice started to lose their fur from postnatal day 11, beginning at the head and progressing toward the tail region of the back," they wrote.

"Between day 20 and day 25, these mice eventually lost all of their body hair, including the whiskers. Intriguingly, new hair regrowth was initiated a few days later but was followed by renewed hair loss."

More than a third of people living here say they have lost hair to some degree, with the problem hitting almost half of all women (47 per cent) questioned in a survey for The National by the pollster YouGov.

Now the two former clients, Virgus Jacques and Margaret Farrell, have filed a class action breach-of-contract and consumer fraud lawsuit against the company, saying they’re part of a larger group that used the program, saw no success and, ultimately, didn’t get their thousands of dollars back despite a guarantee.

NHGI’s routine practice of informing its customers that they will be refunded the total cost of the program if there is no hair growth progress by the program end when NHGI has no intention of refunding the money and telling clients that the program is virtually always successful when the program many times does not work deceives customers, the suit states.

Around 80 women suffering hair loss are being recruited to trial the drug Spironolactone. While there is some evidence the drug is effective in arresting the progress of female baldness, the trial will be the first in the world to provide medical proof of its efficacy. Half of the women will take a placebo; the rest will take the drug.

The New York Times recently reported that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's hair was thinning as a result of extreme stress. If so, doctors say, she's not the only one.

Dermatologists say that although life's normal ups and downs aren't enough to precipitate it, women can lose up to 50% of their hair after an unusually stressful event.

Dr. Rebecca Euwer, a Dallas dermatologist, said that some of the more common causes are childbirth, surgery or a death in the family. "When someone comes in and says they're losing their hair, you ask, 'Well, what happened about three months ago?' " Euwer said.

Patients at a Leeds hospital undergoing chemotherapy are to discover that hair loss is not inevitable.

St James's Institute of Oncology, in Leeds, has just taken delivery of 21 scalp cooling machines, which can reduce or even prevent hair loss in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

A grant from breast cancer charity, Walk the Walk, worth approximately £250,000, has bought the coolers, which are made by Huddersfield-based manufacturer, Paxman Coolers.

The 21 scalp coolers have been causing quite a spectacle in Bexley Wing's impressive glass atrium, at St James's Hospital.

Children with alopecia areata, a condition that causes extensive, sometimes complete hair loss, grew hair after being injected with stem cells drawn from their own scalp in a small study.

Most of the five girls and three boys who had widespread baldness showed regrowth of as much as half of their hair in a preliminary study from Marwa Fawzi, a dermatologist at the University of Cairo Faculty of Medicine.

Before the experimental treatment, some of the children had splotches of hair and baldness; others were almost totally bald.

Alopecia areata can occur at any age in either gender and there are no FDA-approved treatments, according to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

The longest controlled clinical trial of a hair loss treatment ever reported showed that men who took Propecia® (finasteride 1 mg) compared to men who took a placebo had a considerable difference in their hair counts after five years, according to data presented at the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.

The new study showed a difference of 277 hairs in a one-inch diameter circle of scalp in favor of men treated with Propecia for five years (n=219) vs. those who received a placebo (n=15). Baseline hair counts of all men at the start of the study averaged 876 hairs in the one-inch diameter circle.

"This study provides new, long-term scientific data that Propecia helped the majority of men with predominantly vertex male pattern hair loss keep the amount of hair they have," said Keith Kaufman, M.D., senior director, Clinical Research, Merck Research Laboratories. "The study also was the first controlled clinical trial to evaluate the course of untreated hair loss over a five-year period and to show the progressive nature of male pattern hair loss."

Local doctors have responded with a mix of scorn and fascination to the new claim that Botox can be a cure for baldness.

It’s not a claim that’s made by Botox-maker Allergan of Irvine. The announcement came from cosmetic surgeon Dr. Simon Ourian of Beverly Hills, who says injections in patients’ scalps have produced hair growth.

It doesn’t make sense that Botox would cure baldness, says Dr. Christopher Zachary, chairman of the UCI Department of Dermatology. I have injected men numerous times high on the [forehead] and have never seen any hair growth.

New International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery Survey Finds the Number of Hair Restoration Patients Worldwide Increased 26 Percent in 2008

Despite the worldwide economic downturn in 2008, more people continued to seek treatment for hair loss, according to statistics released today from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) -- the world's leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration.

The extrapolated worldwide number of hair restoration patients treated in 2008 was approximately 811,363 (236,468 surgical patients and 574,894 non-surgical patients) -- up 26 percent from 2006.

This significant increase in hair restoration patients coincides with a 12 percent jump in the total number of surgical hair restoration procedures worldwide -- from 225,779 procedures in 2006 to 252,002 procedures in 2008.

Botox, the antiwrinkle injection, is being used as a surprise treatment for baldness.

Balding men may be offered a cure for their thinning heads — injections of Botox. The toxic chemicals are generally used to smooth out wrinkles, but doctors have discovered it can regrow hair too.

Dr Simon Ourian, a cosmetic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, California, claimed that he stumbled upon its unexpected powers by accident while treating his mother who was suffering from migraines after having chemotherapy which had made her hair fall out.

Familiar with Botox's use as a headache treatment, he injected the chemical – the medical name for a form of Botulinum toxin – into her scalp but was surprised to find that it also appeared to help her hair to grow back.

Scientists working for McNeil, makers of Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo, presented the findings of a study done on 1% Nizoral shampoo which has good news for hair loss sufferers.

It has long been known that 2% prescription Nizoral has beneficial effects on Androgenic Alopecia (MPB). It however has been unclear whether the same benefits can be obtained by using the non-prescription 1% version.

In the study presented (see below), one hundred male volunteers with mild to moderate dandruff and somewhat oily scalp, were using, in a double-blind fashion, either a 1% Nizoral shampoo or a 1% zinc pyrithione shampoo, 2-3 times a week for 6 months.

Analysis of the different parameters set up in the study shows that the hair diameter gradually increased with Nizoral use (+8.46%) over a 6 month period, whereas the diameter showed a trend to decrease with zinc pyrithione use over the same period (-2.28%).

Cells called melanocytes produce the pigments that colour hair and their numbers are kept topped up by stem cells.

Hair goes grey when the number of stem cells in hair follicles declines.

Now Emi Nishimura of Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan and colleagues have found what causes this decline in mice.

When the researchers exposed mice to radiation and chemicals that harm DNA, damaged stem cells transformed permanently into melanocytes.

Work or personal stress may make you want to pull your hair out, but it's cellular stress that actually turns it gray, a new study has found.

That's because DNA is "under constant attack" by damaging agents, such as chemicals, ultraviolet light, and ionizing radiation, according to study lead author Emi Nishimura of Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

A single mammal cell can encounter up to 100,000 events a day that damage DNA, Nishimura added in a statement.

The stem cells within hair follicles responsible for color are the most impacted by this irreparable DNA weathering.

Stem cells are cells in the body that can reproduce indefinitely and that have the potential to "mature" into other, more specialized cells. The stem cells in hair follicles mature into melanocytes, or cells that produce the pigment melanin.

Clean shiny hair is seen as a sign of good health, but this is not strictly true as hair is actually dead matter. It is very much more likely a sign of someone who has looked after their hair with proper care and attention to detail.

It is important to choose a shampoo and conditioner that is right for you, hair gets dirty when sebum, an oily substance secreted by the skins sebaceous glands, coats the shaft. Dead skin cells and air bourne dirt stick to the sebum.

It goes without saying that a well-balanced diet is essential to healthy hair growth. Poor diet can be reflected in hair quality to quite an amazing degree, dandruff, dry hair and even hair loss can result.

Stress can also cause a problem in both hair loss and dandruff. Both of which can be detrimental to a lovely shiny head of hair.

The type of shampoo that you use is a purely personal choice, the cosmetic companies that produce them have spent millions of pounds on research over the years so you can usually be sure that the shampoo will clean your hair.
