Nanoguard can help to: Stop excessive hair loss. Reduce folicular access to DHT |
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and Hairloss
It is universally agreed that men and women with male/female pattern baldness have increased levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp, which contributes to a shortening of the growth phase and a thinning of the hair. Testosterone is converted to DHT when in the presence of the enzyme,
5 alpha-reductase

In the presence of Nanoguard, the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone is effectively blocked, meaning the cause of hairloss is partially eliminated and conditions for follicle growth are optimal.
How does Nanoguard A work?
Nanoguard blocks the activity of 5 a-reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone.
This enzyme is present in the scalp and hair follicles at high levels. By blocking this conversion, the levels of the androgen DHT are reduced, which stops the shedding & miniaturisation.
This also revitalizes & protects the hair follicle and creates an environment conducive to healthy hair growth.

PATENTED FORMULA - US Patent 5,972,345
Information for Men
Nanoguard works in the same way as modern anti-hair loss drugs, that is blocking the converstion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone by means of the converting enzyme, 5-alpha reductase.
BUT - oral medecines like 'finasteride' or Propecia® (brand name) that work systemically (ie. throughout the body) have been critisised heavily by many users because of the high incidence of side-effect reports such as problems with libido, maintenance of erections, acne, weight-gain, increased hairiness on the rest of the body and others.
With Nanoguard, you don't have to worry about these side effects, because it is applied directly to the problem area, ie. the scalp.
Information for Women
Nanoguard works in the same way as modern anti-hair loss drugs, that is blocking the converstion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone by means of the converting enzyme, 5-alpha reductase.
Other treatments like 'finasteride' or Propecia® (brand name), work systemically (ie. throughout the body).
Alarmingly, there is such a severe risk to the foetus of a pregnant women that adult females should not even handle the finasteride-containing tablet, which has meant that women could not benefit from anti-DHT technology until Nanoguard was developed.
Introduction to Nanoguard B active
Before you can understand how Nanoguard-B works, it is important to know about the hair follicle's life cycle. Each hair goes through this cycle independently of all other hairs on the scalp:
In addition to a twice-weekly shampoo Nanoguard A, which has patented anti-DHT properties, new Nanoguard-B is a once-daily aqueous solution applied directly to the scalp with three additional properties clinically proven to increase hair density and reduce hairloss:
Regulates the hormonal balance
Hair follicles in the cases of androgenetic alopecia show an abnormally high level of DHT, an androgen converted from testosterone by the enzyme 5a-reductase.
By inhibiting 5a-reductase activity, Nanoguard b severely limits the transformation of T into DHT, thereby limiting the cause of androgenetic alopecia.

Nanoguard B active tested at 0.25% on human fibroblasts shows a significant inhibiting effect on 5 Alpha-reductase II activity (-18%).
This effect is comparable with a reference compound, finasteride.
By inhibiting the activity of this enzyme, the Nanoguard B active limits the transformation of testosterone in 5 Alpha-DHT which is responsible for the follicles miniaturization characteristic of androgenetic alopecia.
Improves vascularization of the hair follicle
Formation of the vascular system near the follicle is an important and necessary factor in the development of hair. VEGF (vascular-endothelial growth factor) is one essential growth factor & has been shown to stimulate both neovascularization, also known as angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth) and vascular permeability (the capacity of a blood vessel wall to pass through small molecules, like water or nutrients).

Photograph depicting Nanoguard B (1%) active effect on angiogenesis.
Nanoguard B increases VEGF by over 30%, as well as making the existing vascular system around the hair follicle denser, which is necessary to provide follicles in the Anagen phase with the nutrients required for hair growth.

Nanoguard B active tested at 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% increases formation of vessels from the existing system. Nanoguard B active favours angiogenesis and thus facilitates the supply of oxygen and nutrients that are essential for cells during the anagen phase, during which cellular activity is very intense.
Stimulates cell metabolism
Cells in the Anagen phase are dividing continuously to support the formation and growth of hair.
Therefore the metabolic activity of the cells around the hair follicle needs to be at a maximum for the formation of healthy hair growth.
Nanoguard B provides zinc, iron and growth peptides to stimulate and boost metabolic activity in the hair bulb cells, favouring the growth of hair.

Nanoguard active (1%) favours the expression of mRNA coding for type 1 transglutaminase, a marker of keratinocyte differentiation.
By boosting the metabolic activity of cells, an important process in the anagen phase, Nanoguard B stimulates hair growth.
The Nanoguard B final product
In the left-hand column, you have just read about the individual effects of the clinically-proven Nanoguard B active on attenuating hairloss and promoting growth as tested in vitro at various concentrations.
In this column, we are looking at the finished Nanoguard B product at 10% concentration tested on 16 real human volunteers suffering from hairloss.

The Test
16 healthy male volunteers aged between 18 & 65, all with slight to moderate thinning hair. No volunteer had used an anti-hairloss treatment before. Nanoguard B was applied once daily for 12 weeks.
The Evaluation Method
A phototrichogram (standardised macrophotographic method) was judged at the start of the study, 6 weeks later and finally after 12 weeks.
This enabled the following to be judged:
- Hair density
- The number of hairs in the anagen phase (growing)
- The number of hairs in the telogen phase (falling out)
This test also enabled the Anagen/Telogen Ratio (A/T) to be calculated. When hairloss occurs, the number of telogen hairs increases, therefore decreasing the A/T ratio.
In a normal scalp, this ratio is between 4:1 (80%) and 9:1 (90%). When less than 1.5:1 (60%), the scalp is clearly pathologic.
Hair Density

The expected hair density in a scalp free of alopecia is in the order of 200-400 hairs per square centimetre. In people with alopecia, that density decreases considerably, especially in the crown region and may reach 80 hairs/cm2

Why does the total number decrease after 44 days?
When hair growth is stimulated, a large amount of follicles move from the Telogen phase to the Anagen phase simultaneously, which has the obvious consequence of hairloss during the initial phase of treatment (shedding).
Although it may sound counter-intuitive, more than usual hairloss is usually an indication the formula is working according to the published studies. The new hair that replaces that just lost will be thicker, stronger and with more colour.

Effect on the Anagen/Telogen Ratio
Evaluation of Acceptability
At each visit, a dermatology examination was conducted on the scalp, with a search for the following signs:
- pruritus (absent, minor, moderate, major)
- seborrhea of the scalp (absent, minor, moderate, major)
- erythema (absent, minor, moderate, major)
- dandruff (absent, minor, moderate, major)
- exudation (absent, minor, moderate, major)
Any sign described by the volunteer was entered in the case report form.
No volunteer reported a sign of intolerance and/or discomfort
Evaluation of the effect of Nanoguard B on reducing hairloss
After 44 days of daily application of the product Nanoguard B
- Total hair density decreased slightly
- The density of hair in the anagen phase remained stable
- The Anagen/Telogen ratio increased considerably (+85.8%), resulting from a decrease in the quantity of hair in the telogen phase.
After 86 days of daily application of the product Nanoguard B
- Total hair density increased by 11.9% compared to day 1. This increase was statistically significant.
- The density of hair in the anagen phase increased by 17.1% compared to day 1. This increase was statistically significant
- The Anagen/Telogen ratio increased by 117.7% compared to day 1. This increase was statistically significant.
