Iain Sallis, East Yorkshire’s only
trichologist, is setting the ball in motion to unite hair salons and
clinics across the country for the first time as he looks to provide
free training for hairdressers and their employees on how to spot
hair and scalp problems in clients.
Iain’s first free ‘Trichology Training Evening’ will be held at the
Andrew Barton salon in Leeds on the 29th September lasting
approximately 3 hours. Although literature and invites will be sent
out to salons in the surrounding areas, any interested parties are
welcome contact Iain directly to book in.
Trichology is the branch of medicine that deals with the scientific
study of the health of hair and scalp and Iain, who owns his own
hair salons and heads up his ‘Iain Sallis Trichology clinics’ in
London, Leeds, Hull, York, Sheffield, Lincoln and Nottingham is one
of only a handful of qualified trichologists, or ‘hair doctors’ in
the UK.
Through this ‘first of its kind’ training exercise, Iain is looking
to make a shift in the attitudes of hairdressers, highlighting
everything from what a trichologist is, and how they can help their
particular salon as well as explaining hair myths and common hair
problems - identifying scalp disorders and what to do with a client
with a potentially medical problem.
Commenting on his desire to amalgamate trichology skills with
hairdressers potential to help their clients, Iain comments, ‘As
both a hairdresser and trichologist, I’m passionate about creating
closer links with other salons as I we see what we do as two sides
of the same coin - we look after peoples hair and scalps.
With 1 in 3 women suffering from hair loss and many others afflicted
with scalp problems I really do believe that hairdresser, many of
whom have close relationships with their clients, have the duty to
understand more about the hair they’re cutting and the ability to
advise on what is a very personal and often distressing ailment. My
free training isn’t about preaching to hairdressers, it is simply
offering them an additional skills as trusted professionals ”
With so many people experiencing hair problems across the UK, many
are unaware of the fact that their problem is more than just a
cosmetic issue.
The problem with specialist shampoos and treatments sold by salons
is they are unable to solve any further medical problems.
“My job is often a little ‘Sherlock Holmes’esque’, hair problems are
often the only sign of an underlying medical issue. It’s my job to
find out the root of the problem and treat it this way – working
closely with doctors” Iain adds.
