Alopecia areata genetic study, recruitment call for
Europe and Scandinavia based volunteers
A European and Scandinavian consortium
of 25 clinics in 12 countries are planning a large scale
study to define general alopecia areata susceptibility
and resistance genes in families of alopecia areata
affected individuals.
Alopecia areata probably involves a
complex interaction between several susceptibility and
resistance genes plus alopecia areata activating and
inhibiting environmental factors. Several research
studies are underway in the USA and Europe to examine
both genetic and environmental modification of alopecia
areata involving human volunteers and laboratory models.
This genetic study will involve a
comprehensive, genome-wide screen of DNA isolated from
blood samples provided by donors. Statistical analysis
of the results will provide information on areas of the
human genome where genes involved in AA are located.
With this information, and using data from the recently
completed human genome mapping project, candidate genes
can later be defined and examined in detail to evaluate
how they may be involved in alopecia areata.

Dandruff, the most common scaling
scalp condition, is simply a build up of dead skin cells
on the scalp. Skin cells are being shed from our scalps
all the time, but are usually shed as very fine
particles which we don't even notice. Dandruff sufferers

Bizarre hair story of the year !
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Scared of
losing your hair? Well why not lock up those locks -- in
a temperature- controlled underground vault, protected
from fires, floods and earthquakes (news - web sites)?
Why not, indeed!
A San Francisco-based start-up,
Hairogenics, on Monday Apri l29 officially launched a
new subterranean hair storage service, adding a new
strand to mankind's endless search for a safer, fuller
head of hair. Hairogenics chief executive Michael
Blaylock said his company would preserve hair samples in
its special underground vault, keeping it fresh until
science can devise a way to "clone" hair from DNA.
"Ask five different scientists when
simple cell repair products will be available to the
public and you'll get five different answers," Blaylock
said. "But it is going to happen, it is a question of
time." In the meantime, Hairogenics promises to keep
your hair safe and secure in its vault underneath a
Portland, Oregon hair salon -- vacuum-sealed in
waterproof packages and stored in a darkened,
temperature- controlled environment to protect it from
light and moisture.
