Halloween Fright Survey What Makes Your Hair Stand On End

October 2009

In a poll of 1,200 people, over a quarter found creepy crawlies to be the scariest thing they'd encountered, compared to 20 per cent citing clowns whilst Hannibal the Cannibal came in a close third.

The survey, which asked: 'what makes your hair stand on end?' was conducted by Optima Hair Specialists, which creates bespoke advanced hair replacement systems for both men and women suffering from hair loss.

Anthony Hopkin's classic portrayal wasn't the only screen character who made the top ten - characters like Freddie Kruger, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers also featured in the poll.

Peter Murtha, founder of Optima, said: "We're in the business of giving people back their hair, so in the run up to Halloween, thought we'd ask our customers what makes it stand on end? I have to admit that I can't bare spiders and clowns give me the creeps too, so I'm not surprised that they came out on top."

The poll of 1,200 people* across the UK revealed the following top 10 things that make your hair stand on end:

1. Spiders 26%

2. Clowns 20%

3. Hannibal Lecter 12%

4. Rats 11%

5. Freddie Kruger 9%

6. Michael Myers 8%

7. Snakes 6%

8. Jason Voorhees 4%

9. The Scream mask 3%

10. Sharks 1%
