Reverse the effects of aging with hair plugs

We have nearly 100,000 hairs on our head. We've lost half of them before we even notice our hair is thinning, and when we lose hairs, we often miss them.

"Hair grows as either one two or three hair grafts together," cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vito Quatela said.

Dr. Quatela uses the latest hair transplantation procedure: hair plugs that use 15 or more hairs.

In this area, we've probably made about 150 slits," Dr. Quatela said.

The hair is harvested from the back of the patient's head.

"You're able to borrow six to 8,000 grafts from the back of the head without really missing it," Dr. Quatela said.

This line is sewn shut. Technicians then start splitting hairs, taking the strip and breaking it down into separate hair grafts.

"And, those hair grafts are condos if you would. They are self-contained. Blood supply, oil gland, that sort of thing," Quatela said.

That has enormously changed the naturalness of the result.

The problem of women and hair loss is growing. Dr. Quatela said the number of women seeking to have this procedure done has tripled over the last few years.

Sherrie Curry has enough hair on her head, but it was her eyebrows that were missing. So, she had these hairs transplanted.

"Trim them once a week because they grow like the hair on your head," Curry said.

The lateral slit technique, as it's called, takes a whole work day.

"But the result, as far as the aesthetic, is far worth the tediousness of the procedure," Curry added.

To be eligible, you can't be completely bald, and you have to be at least 25 years old. The cost can range from $3500 to $7,000.
