Restoring Hair and Self Confidence

Combating Baldness

Nov 2005

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, two out of three men in this country develop some form of balding. The majority of men suffering from baldness experience a hereditary condition decreasing the amount of androgens introduced by the body. They have increased levels of a hormone known as reductase, which in turn transforms testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT causes the growth phases of hair follicles to become shorter. The hair sprouts shorter and finer for an extended time until they eventually die out.

There are cutting-edge treatments in the world of hair renewal and many more to be introduced. Hair transplantation surgery is extremely popular today and can be of great success when an experienced physician performs it.

"The procedure involves as much artistry as it does skill," declares Dr. Randall Sword. Dr. Sword is head of Sword Medical Center in Torrance, California. Sword Medical Center is specifically dedicated to hair treatment and transplantation surgery. "I have personally performed more that 25,000 of these procedures. It is important to be both knowledgeable and comfortable to make the procedure successful."

The procedure used by Dr. Sword involves surgically removing hair from the back of the head at the base of the neck and relocating the hair follicles to the top and front of the head. The reason this site is chosen for harvesting is because the back of the head is resistant to the chemical DHT. Because of this, there is a lower likelihood of them falling from the scalp.

Since hair restoration is a minor form of surgery, directly following the procedure it may be possible to return to normal activities such as work. "Some people are concerned about how they will look after the procedure," says Dr. Sword. "Some have the notion that their entire head will be bandaged and this is further from the truth. The procedure takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and we only recommend the patient rests the full day of the procedure."

Dr. Sword invites any interested patient to visit Sword Medical surgical office in Torrance, CA, or the website (www.swordmedical.com) for extensive information and to view a video of the procedure.
