New technology boost thanks to generosity

Published Nov 2004

CANCER patients who have chemotherapy at Furness General Hospital are to benefit from new technology which minimises hair loss.

The £6,500 Paxman Hair Loss Prevention System will be funded by the additional donations to our Evening Mail Oncology Appeal, which this week hit the £25,000 total.

We have an extra £1,050 in the pot and it’s growing every day.

Angela Chelton, 44, of Sheeplands Grove, Barrow, gave the thumbs up to the new technology, nicknamed the “cold cap” by users.

She said: “I think every woman would like to keep their hair.”

Sister Liz Johnston, oncology unit manager, said: “Chemotherapy drugs target fast-growing cells and that’s what tumours are and so are hair and nails. It attacks everything in its path but by cooling the scalp you constrict the hair follicles, and by doing so for a certain time you can minimise hair loss.”

The machine has been trialled at FGH for four months and eight female patients have used it.

The hospital has placed an order for the cold cap. In addition to the £6,500 machine they hope to buy four extra caps, at £630 apiece.

Lyndsay Aspin, Evening Mail marketing and sales director, said: “Patients would feel a tremendous benefit if they could have the opportunity to use the cold cap.”

Donations can be made at Evening Mail offices.
