(National) June 15, 2004 - Hair
transplants are no longer limited to receding (or re-seeding)
hairlines. Doctors are now able to use a new technique to
transplant follicles to any area a patient want to be more
hirsute.
Overplucking is to blame for Cristina Canella's sparse
eyebrows. Dr. Jeffrey Epstein says, a hair restoration expert,
took hair follicles from her head and transplanted them into her
eyebrows, "The look is a thicker eyebrow, so, while some of
these women 30 years ago, 20 years ago when they were in their
20, plucked their eyebrows out, now they're desiring to have
more natural looking eyebrows."
Because it's such a small area, eyebrow transplants are hard
to do, "Each graft needs to be placed precisely into the exact
position, so that the hairs don't grow straight out. Rather,
they grow flat."
Dr. Epstein says goatees are tricky, too, "The nice thing
about beard transplant is that similar to scalp the hairs keep
growing. They need to be trimmed, so when we take the hair from
the scalp and put them in the beard they continue to grow as the
normal beard hair would grow."
And, while most men these days are removing chest hair, one
patient had hair from the back of his head transplanted to his
chest, "These are the days when much more guys are interested in
laser hair removal than hair replacement... However, there still
are some ... men and women that desire more hair in areas that
they weren't born with or that they lost."
A transplant can cost between $2500 and $4000 depending on
the look you want to achieve. For more information contact your
physician.
