Hair loss has many causes, of which intentional pulling out of hair is one of the more distressing. Short term use of antidepressants and lithium and hypnosis offer limited help. A case report in the Israel Medical Association Journal (2002;4:226-7 [Medline] ) describes a successful account of family therapy for trichotillomania in a young boy, which took place in primary care. Critical observations included the identification of multiple losses, the absence of a father figure for the boy, and an overly enmeshed relationship between mother and son.
