New Hair Loss Treatment Uses Your Own Blood

July 2011

How far would you go for a full, thick head of hair? If you've tried the specialized shampoos and over the counter treatments without success, patients say they're seeing results from a new procedure.

With every stroke of her brush, Cheryl Sever makes creative designs come alive, but over the past 15 years, she's had to get creative with something else: her appearance.

Cheryl had needed wigs to cover her disappearing hair.

She suffers from an auto immune disease that causes inflammation and scarring called Discoid Lupus.

"The Discoid Lupus took all the hair on the top of my head and I really was a basket case," said Sever.

Because every time the Lupus returned, Cheryl's balding scalp got worse.

"It scarred, it was red, it was shiny..I was going to a dermatologist for about two years and every month I would get shots in my head," she adds.

Her dermatologist recommended she see hair restoration specialist Dr. Joseph Greco for an experimental home grown elixir made from a syringe of her very own blood.

"The more we learn about growth factor, stem cell and cellular therapy..the sky's the limit," said Greco.

Cheryl's blood is spun down in a special container and two kinds of fluid are carefully removed. The first is PRP, short for platelet rich plasma. It contains stem cells, growth factors and cell fragments used in clotting. The second is platelet poor plasma, which typically goes to waste, but by using filters, Dr. Greco creates a super concentrated solution called oro-gen plus, made specifically for her.

The rest of that protein rather tan throwing that away - that's the secret track," said Greco.

You can see that secret in an electron microscope image.

The proteins act as scaffolds, trapping growth factors and stem cells.

Before putting the scaffolds in place, Cheryl first goes through a process called micro-needling.

"We want to stimulate the follicles and stimulate the stem cells in the follicle," said Greco.

She's then ready for injections of the plasma mixture.

"We want to try and improve each layer of the scalp," said Greco.

Take a look at her before and after treatment pictures.

"I was really shocked..you hear something that is too good to be true and I thought, no this is not going to work, but it truly did," said Cheryl.

The question now: How long will the benefits last? Because it's experimental, Cheryl says she's committed to treatments for as long as it takes.

"I'm afraid to lose the hair again, so if I have to have it done every six months, I will do that," she said.

Grateful, her wigs can now sit stored away, instead of on her head.

"I'm so glad..I thank God every day that I did this."

The cost is $1,000 per treatment.
