New Findings on Hair Loss at International Hair Research Conference in Jerusalem
European Hair Research Society Conference is a leading forum that represents the major shifts and trends in the field of Hair Research
July 2011
The Western world's largest conference to date on hair research and
hair loss met in Jerusalem recently, when over 400 dermatologists
and scientists attended the four-day 15th Annual Meeting of the
European Hair Research Society (EHRS).
The Jerusalem Post reports that the event attracted over 450 experts
in the field from 30 countries, about half of them from Israel. It
was led by senior dermatologist and professor Abraham Zlotogorski,
director of the hair clinic at Hadassah University Medical Center in
Jerusalem's Ein Kerem and director of the hospital's Center for
Genetic Diseases of Skin and Hair.
Trichology (from the Greek word for hair) is the official name for
the medical specialty that studies hair. "Trichology is a
subspecialty of dermatology," explained Zlotogorski, "but there
isn't even one country where it is officially recognized. At
present, hair disorders are part of the work of dermatologists, who
also treat venereal diseases."
New Treatments and Tools For Hair Loss
Zlotogorski spoke about recent advances in the study of hair
diseases, especially those that cause hair loss. Doctors can now
diagnose hair loss by a patient's medical history, a physical exam
and lab testing of hair strands, blood and genetic samples. The
latest technology for this is a new instrument called a trichoscope,
which is similar to a dermascope (used for skin disease diagnosis),
but for hair. The device is expensive now, but young dermatologists
are most likely to have it.
The Future of Hair
Zlotogorski said evolution over the next thousand years could result
in much less body hair and more head hair, which could make bald
heads sexy to women. But he also mentioned that scientists are
continuing to research new drugs that will increase hair growth.
This conference is evidence of the continuing and focused,
cutting-edge research by international scientists into the study of
hair and hair loss. It should give hope for new cures to those who
suffer from disfiguring hair loss today.
