Muskego woman invents no-sweat liner to help athletes
April 2011
Jodi Pliszka struggled with the same
disorder that affected former Milwaukee Buck player Charlie
Villanueva. They both suffered from alopecia, which is a condition
where the body's white blood cells see hair as an infection. The
white blood cells kill off the hair leaving a person bald.
Villanueva wears a headband, and plays basketball at the highest
level in the world. Jodi is a different type of athlete with
alopecia. She says, "Besides being in Tae Kwan Do, I'm a triathlete.
So I like to do the
short triathlons, so of course running. I have no eyebrows or eye
lashes so sweat would just pour into my eyes, and I know that most
of the athletes out there, with baseball season coming up, sweat
rolling into the eyes is something that we just kind of put up with,
and I didn't want to have to put up with that anymore."
Jodi's creation is essentially a liner made of wickering material.
In this case, necessity was the mother of invention. Now that her
product is on the market, all kinds of athletes are finding it to be
a practical aid. Jodi says, "Sheila Teramina, a four-time Olympian,
used our product, and also the Australian Equestrian Team used our
product in the Beijing Olympics."
Jodi's brand, Headline It, is big news for athletes with alopecia.
The liners are a big seller, and Jodi is confident in the product's
ability to help other athletes be comfortable.
