Head & Shoulders has been one of Britain’s best-known shampoos for
60 years, helping to rid the population of dandruff.
Now its is cleaning up in China where it is helping millions
afflicted with the embarrassing condition.
Huge numbers of the Chinese population are said to suffer from it.
But manufacturer Procter & Gamble hope the arrival of its shampoo
will leave millions of Chinese confidently flicking their hair –
without any fear of unsightly flakes.
Irwin Lee, the man charged with exporting the product to China,
said: “Half of the population have dandruff.
“Bringing in Head & Shoulders to address dandruff made a difference
in their lives.
“Before we brought the [shampoo’s] two-in-one technology
hair-washing was not a very good experience in China.” Dandruff is
caused by sebum – a greasy substance found on our scalps – and a
micro-organism called malassezia.
Malassezia has adapted to live off sebum and produces oleic acid
which it deposits on our scalps.
The way our bodies respond to this causes inflammation of the top
layer of skin and this leads to an increased turnover of skin cells.
They also clump together so we see them as flakes of dandruff.
Flakes of skin shed by the scalp are often dismissed as no more than
an embarrassing irritant. Persistent dandruff, however, could be a
sign of a diet deficient in vitamin B and essential fatty acids.
A diet that is high in sugar can worsen the condition, which is
thought to afflict about half of the world’s population.
