Why are England's wig-makers thinning out?

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

England's wig-making industry "has almost died", according to some of its most experienced figures.

But it is not the likes of Wayne Rooney and Louis Walsh turning to hair transplant surgery that has brought their traditional craft to its knees.

Instead the cause is high labour costs and competition from China that some in the industry say they simply cannot compete with.

George Theurer, chairman of the wig suppliers group at the UK's Hairdressing and Beauty Suppliers Association (HBSA), said: "Labour costs are much lower in China, the quality of what they produce is excellent and cheaper than what we can produce.

"There's a sad inevitability about it all."

Of the 25 wig suppliers in the HBSA most now concentrate almost entirely on supplying wigs made overseas. Only two still produce wigs from scratch.

Jason Alexander Reveals The Company Behind His Custom Hair System In Exclusive Video Interview

Friday, March 02, 2012

Farrell Hair Replacement, a world leader in ultra custom, non-surgical hair replacement, announced today the release of a new video interview with film and television star Jason Alexander.

Most of us are familiar with the character of George Louis Costanza in the American television sitcom ‘Seinfeld’, and know that George was constantly trying to find a miracle cure for his baldness. The character of George was played by Jason Alexander who embodied the 1980s bald look. The amazing thing is that now, despite the fact he is in his 50s, Jason looks more youthful than he looked in his 30s while playing George.

The famous celebrity news site TMZ posted recent pictures of Jason and commented on his new look. It says, “Jason Alexander: The Magical Hair Growth." Well, Jason has revealed the secret of his youthful look: Farrell Hair Replacement. He is not ashamed to acknowledge that he is wearing a hairpiece now.

In an interview, Jason said that he started balding at age 17 and after initially being sad, he really embraced it. Jason and his wife have explored various options that could help Jason look younger without hurting his options as an actor. At one point, Jason even considered shaving his head, but this was not a viable option as it might limit his acting roles, so he began looking at ways to get some of his hair back.

Of course, Jason thought about grafts and implants. However, he couldn’t trust these methods to be good enough for him. And with implants or grafts he would have lost the option of playing the truly bald characters. So he started looking for a solution that would fit his personality and complement his career. He decided the solution would be to get a customized hairpiece.

Being a Hollywood celebrity, Jason wanted to work with only the best hair system company in the world. So he chose Farrell Hair Replacement. He wanted something that would give him some hair but wouldn’t limit his ability to play balding characters. This was a challenge that he threw to Farrell Hair and Farrell Hair was able to meet this challenge with ease, giving him his desired looks.

‘Seinfeld’ star now wears a wig

Thursday, October 06, 2011

Seinfeld star Jason Alexander has confessed the real reason for his remarkable baldness reversal - he's wearing a wig.

The actor sparked rumours he'd undergone treatment to replenish his thinning locks when he was snapped sporting a full head of hair earlier this week and told fans he was "experimenting with some interesting hair systems".

But now he's admitted the truth behind his new tresses - he's wearing a toupee.

In a post on Twitter.com, he writes, "The way my hair has receded in the last two years was best defined as dorky. I started balding at age 17 and after first being sad, I really embraced it. I was always cast older than my actual age which generally meant better roles...

"(But) there was a practical element - onstage and even to a degree on film, my head had become a big beacon, reflecting light in a very obvious and distracting way.

"My wife and I discussed it and came up with 3 options - do nothing and accept it; shave my head (but I thought that might limit my castability even more) or put some hair back. I thought about grafts or implants but frankly didn't trust the results would be good enough and also wanted to retain the option of playing truly bald characters. So I began looking for a hair system.

"What you see on my head is a really good, semi-permanent hairpiece. By semi-permanent I mean that I can wear it constantly for weeks at a time, if I so choose. I can swim, shower, work out - whatever. It stays on... The reason it looks thin is that I challenged my designer to make me a piece that would look very similar to the way I did 10 years ago. So, it looks like a guy who is losing his hair and isn't an artificial mop of hair that I never had... It's honestly no big deal for me and hope it's not for you either."

Baldness will not stop Miss Delaware

Monday, January 03, 2011

In a little more than 2 weeks, the Miss America Pageant will be held in Las Vegas.

One of our local contestants, Miss Delaware Kayla Martell, suffers from a rare condition that results is hair loss. But that was not enough to stop her from chasing her dream.

"If I had given up on my first, second, third or fourth try, I wouldn't be here right now," Martell told Action News.

The fifth time was the charm that crowned Kayla Martell Miss Delaware. Now she's primping and preparing for the upcoming Miss America pageant, where standing out in a group of 53 is the name of the game.

And that is something Martell's used to doing. Underneath the blonde tufts of her big and glamorous pageant hair, Kayla is bald.

"I couldn't believe that at 10 I was balding," Martell says. "Especially being a young girl. Your hair is your crowning glory."

Kayla suffers from alopecia areata (American Academy of Dermatology) - unexplainable hair loss.

Your body is essentially allergic to your hair. There are no proven treatments and no proven cure.

Kayla went through school bald. When she's not on stage, you won't see her in a wig.

"When I go grocery shopping, when I go out with my friends, when I am at home, I am without the wig. That's the real me," Martell says.

Hair loss help proves wig business for Mel

Saturday, January 01, 2011

An entrepreneur whose mum lost her hair after undergoing chemotherapy treatment has opened a luxury wig boutique.

Mel Burrell was devastated when her 55-year-old Pat Lowe was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus in 2008.

She lost all of her hair after a programme of chemotherapy and the experience shattered her confidence and meant she had to visit wig shops which were either clinical, uninviting and or very dated.

Her 32-year-old daughter, who has a background in financial services, was looking to start her own business.

And her mum’s horrendous experience prompted her to open luxury wig shop Parrucche in Virginia Street, Merchant City, Glasgow, geared towards women who have lost their hair through cancer or alopecia.

She said: “It was in 2008 when she was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus.

“She lost all her hair and my sister and I found ourselves going around all the wig shops with her. But we felt they didn’t provide the kind of service my mum needed.

“She is quite a strong woman, but when she lost all her hair it was very difficult for her. We are quite a close family, but when she was diagnosed it brought us even closer together because we all wanted to be there for her.”

Birmingham wig specialist Pink Hair wins Small Business Award

Thursday, December 09, 2010

A Birmingham hair salon which specialises in wigs for people suffering from hair loss has taken the title in the West Midlands Small Business Awards.

Kingstanding-based Pink Hair beat off competition from 14 other nominees to take the prize at a ceremony held at Aston Villa Football Club.

The salon in Hawthorn Road was launched three years ago by directors Linda Allan, Anne Canning and Peter Howarth in response to requests from clients keen to find a specialist in hair replacement.

“We wanted somewhere with individual rooms where we would have the time and space to offer individual service to people who were experiencing hair loss,” said Linda. “When we set up we said that, as long as we could cover our costs, that would be all right.”

In the event the salon has exceeded expectations with clients visiting from across the country – and beyond.

“There isn’t anything like us, we are unique,” said Linda. “And we have had people come from the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, even Spain.”

The service aims to ensure the hair choices are right for the client.

Hair loss victims turn to caps, not doctors

Friday, October 29, 2010

While most men say hair loss erodes self-confidence, few would seek treatment. That's one of the findings of a survey carried out among 300 men aged 25 to 49 who suffer from mild to serious hair loss.

Furthermore, 68 percent said hair loss reduces their attractiveness and self-confidence, with half saying it reduces their chances of finding a girlfriend and that they will wear a cap to hide their problem when meeting new friends.

More than 40 percent said hair loss hinders their competitiveness in the job market and 32 percent fear they may not be assigned frontline jobs.

A dermatologist, Lam Pang, said only a minority of respondents have visited doctors, while many use shampoos, seek advice from hairdressers or the internet for their hair loss.

"They should consult doctors as soon as possible instead of using the unreliable methods, which may worsen hair loss problems, and waste their time and money," Lam said.

There was no radical treatment for hair loss, but taking medicines could help control it.

Another dermatologist, Joseph Fung Wai-kit, said male pattern baldness is common among Hong Kong men, because it is usually hereditary.

Other factors include smoking, alcohol, stress and pollution.

Teen cancer wig scheme helps 60 girls feel fabulous

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

A Campaign for teenage girls with cancer has provided almost 60 youngsters with real hair wigs.

The Teenage Cancer Trust's Hair 4U offers wigs to young girls who suffer hair loss as a result of chemotherapy.

It involves Edinburgh hairdressing icon Charlie Miller offering free one-to-one consultations at his Stafford Street salon, where he fits, cuts and styles the wigs.

Rachel Blair, 18, who was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis - a rare, life-threatening condition, primarily affecting young children - on Mother's Day 2008, is one of many girls to have benefited from the initiative. She was given the all-clear a year ago.

The former Tynecastle High School pupil, who lives on Sighthill Loan, said: "I got an NHS wig but it was a fibre wig and it was like Barbie hair. It would get matted all the time and wouldn't sit right. Having the real hair wig made a huge difference; it was long, my natural hair colour - brown - and just how my hair used to be.

"To have the feeling of it being real and sitting nicely, and no-one looking at you twice because you've got a hat on with no hair or a really bad wig, makes you feel the same as everybody else."

Hair InXs – A Revolutionary Approach to Hair

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Many women have experienced the trauma of thinning hair or more drastic hair loss. Research suggests that between 20-40% of women will suffer from hair loss at some point throughout their lives.

Based in Windsor, Hair INXS is both a hairdressing salon and a specialist in hair extensions and cosmetic hair replacement systems. At the heart of the salon’s practise, Hair INXS offers a ‘semi-permanent’ cosmetic hair replacement solution for women affected by the trauma of hair loss.

Female hair loss continues to be one of the last taboos and women who have lost their hair often feel isolated and too embarrassed to visit a hairdresser to discuss their problems. Though wigs and headscarves can serve to disguise the problem, many women feel uncomfortable wearing them and are looking for a more permanent hair replacement solution.

Common reasons for female hair loss include: alopecia, radiotherapy and chemotherapy following cancer or brain tumours, chemical damage, genetic thinning, female pattern baldness, lupus, trichotillomania and stress related conditions. Severity can range from noticeable thinning through to complete and permanent baldness and can affect women of all ages.

New hair-loss service for cancer sufferers

Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Cancer sufferers who face the anguish of losing their hair during chemotherapy are being offered more help thanks to a new service that has started in Glasgow.

The HeadStrong initiative, run by Breast Cancer Care Scotland and Marie Curie, has opened at the charity’s city hospice.

The service will be staffed by seven volunteers, including several who have suffered cancer and hair loss.

Broadcaster Kaye Adams, a long-term supporter of Breast Cancer Care Scotland and Marie Curie, said: “I’ve spoken to lots of people who have had treatment for breast cancer, both in my private and professional life, so I know just what a devastating impact hair loss can have.

“HeadStrong is great as it offers direct and immediate support at a time when people need it most. Knowing that this service is out there will give those set to undergo cancer treatment a real confidence boost.”

More than 4000 women in Scotland are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Most women suffering from cancer go through the traumatic experience of losing their hair due to the side-effects of chemotherapy treatments.
