Expert guidelines help to make it easier to identify and treat patients with hereditary hair loss

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

The active ingredient in REGAINE® recognised as the only over-the-counter treatment proven to work by European Dermatology Forum.

An international expert consensus has been reached on the effective identification and treatment of hereditary hair loss, providing invaluable guidance to pharmacists.

The European Dermatology Forum conducted its first evidence-based analysis of all therapeutic options for hereditary hair loss and agreed a set of recommendations to improve patient treatment for a condition that can significantly reduce quality of life.

The new guidelines recommend just one over-the-counter treatment option for men and women - minoxidil - the active ingredient in REGAINE®. It was chosen because of its safety profile and strong supporting evidence that it prevents the progression of hair loss and improves hair growth.

Minoxidil works by increasing blood supply to hair follicles, increasing hair shaft diameter and prolonging the hair growth phase for a thicker, fuller head of hair.

Salesmen top of Britain’s professions most likely to lose hair, according to new research

Saturday, April 21, 2012

A study, conducted by REGAINE® for Men Foam of 1,903 male workers, found 60%[i] of those specialising in selling goods or services suffer from some degree of hair loss – with either a receding hair line, thinning on the scalp or total baldness. Just over half of those people working in the sales industry believe their long working hours have contributed to their thinning hair[ii].

The results of the survey show that second in the list of balding professions are software engineers and developers – with 59% claiming to have some degree of baldness[iii].

While 55% of male nurses have to contend with their scalp becoming more visible as time goes by – and take third place in the poll[iv].

Nicola Reid, Brand Manager for REGAINE® for Men Foam says: ‘While it’s commonly believed that stress and work pressures make hair loss worse, the hereditary nature of the condition means that it’s more likely that your parents are to blame not your career choice!’

Fourth place in the poll goes to drivers –71% of those work long hours and a third of those hard workers credit their hair loss to long days in the job[v].

Resolve to Take Charge of Your Thinning Hair: NEW Video Tools from ROGAINE

The New Year is the perfect time to revamp your look. If you are among the 39 million women or 40% of men in the U.S. suffering from hereditary hair loss, what better time than now to take control of your do’ by simply changing up your daily routine and freshening up your style.

Celebrity hair stylist Thom Priano combines his thinning hair care know-how with this season’s hottest trends to provide these simple and effective tips and tricks: For Women:

· Short cuts can help make thinning hair appear thicker – try a cropped cut like Michelle Williams or Emma Watson

· To keep short hair looking modern and fuller, change up your hair color. Try a lighter shade to minimize the contrast between hair and scalp

· For curly hair, try retro waves and a zig-zag part – use volumizer and let hair dry naturally before styling

· For more fullness, blow dry hair in the opposite direction of where you intend it to go

For Men:

· A big trend for men in 2012 is to keep hair short on the sides and longer on the top – which is great for minimizing the appearance of thinning on top. Slick back the top for a look like Ryan Gosling or Michael Pitt

· A touch of volumizing mousse or pomade helps hair appear thicker – but keep it minimal. Right now it’s all about clean, natural looking hair

· Don’t over compensate your thinning hair with a full beard – clean-shaven faces are in this season. It’s all about fresh, healthy looking hair and skin

Woman Swipes Stock Of Rogaine From CVS

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

The shelf was left bare at a CVS Pharmacy in Downers Grove, police say, when a woman stole the store’s entire stock of Rogaine hair loss treatment earlier this week.

It was the noise of boxes falling that first tipped off a store clerk, police say.

And then a woman ran out and the anti-theft alarm went off. Workers found that 10 boxes of Rogaine worth $400 were missing from the shelf.

Police say store video shows the woman was in and out of the store in two minutes.

They say she ran out to a Chevy Tahoe–where three men were waiting–and then they all sped off.

5% minoxidil foam once daily versus 2% minoxidil solution August 2011

Monday, August 01, 2011

A randomized, single-blind trial of 5% minoxidil foam once daily versus 2% minoxidil solution twice daily in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in women.

BACKGROUND: Although twice-daily application of propylene glycol-containing 2% minoxidil topical solution (MTS) stimulates new hair growth, higher concentrations of minoxidil in a once-daily, propylene glycol-free formulation may improve efficacy and reduce unpleasant side effects.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the efficacy, safety, and acceptability and to show noninferiority of once-daily 5% minoxidil topical foam (MTF) with twice-daily 2% MTS in women with androgenetic alopecia.

METHODS: A total of 113 women with androgenetic alopecia were randomized to 24 weeks of treatment with 5% MTF or 2% MTS. The primary efficacy parameter was change from baseline in nonvellus target area hair count at week 24. Secondary end points included change in nonvellus target area hair width, overall efficacy by global photographic review as assessed by treatment-blinded evaluators and the subject herself, adverse events, and participants' assessment of product aesthetics.

Lady Gaga taking anti-baldness drug

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Lady Gaga is reportedly taking an anti-baldness drug.

The 25-year-old singer - who has experienced hair loss because of how often she has dyed her tresses - has started using Rogaine in order to reverse the years of damage she has subjected her locks to in the name of fashion.

A source is quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: "Over the years Lady Gaga has put her locks under a lot of stress. She's poured so much chemicals over them that it's damaged her follicles.

"She's hoping by using Rogaine, she can repair some of the harm."

The 'Born This Way' hitmaker reportedly first started worrying about her hair while on her epic 'Monster Ball Tour'.

A source claims Gaga went ballistic backstage because whenever she "dragged a comb through her frazzled, bleached tresses, there was hair everywhere - in the comb, on the floor, in her hands".

Perrigo is approved to release generic version of Men's Rogaine Foam

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

It looks like Perrigo Co. will have another generic product to help grow its bottom line -- while it grows hair for retail customers.

Allegan-based Perrigo announced Monday that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make and market an over-the-counter, generic version of baldness fighter Men's Rogaine Foam. Perrigo sells generic and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and nutritional products that major retailers sell under their own store labels.

Rogaine Foam has annual sales of about $60 million, as measured by Information Resources, Inc., according to information provided by Perrigo. It is a topical treatment used to try to regrow hair on the scalp. Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine.

The approval follows the resolution in February of a patent infringement lawsuit in which Stiefel Research Australia Pty. Ltd. had sought to prevent Perrigo's generic product launch.

Pharmacists not confident on hair loss, Regaine survey shows

Saturday, January 29, 2011

Almost half (43 per cent) of pharmacists believe they should take a more active role in providing advice and recommending treatments to hair loss sufferers, according to a survey for McNeil’s Regaine.

The hair regrowth brand surveyed 50 pharmacists about their views on how they could help patients suffering hair loss.

One fifth admitted they were not confident answering questions on hair loss, with over a quarter saying they were less confident dealing with the topic than with questions on other men’s health conditions.

The results showed 49 per cent of pharmacists are asked for advice on hair loss at least once a month.

Hair loss during menopause treatable with right diagnosis

Wednesday, January 05, 2011

Dermatologists today have more options for treating hair loss during menopause than ever before. But according to one expert in the field of female hair loss, unless the right diagnosis is made, the treatments might be less than effective.

"We know more about the mechanisms of hair loss than we did a decade ago, and have a wide variety of pharmaceuticals and treatments to choose from," says Theodore J. Daly, M.D., F.A.A.D., director, Garden City Dermatology, Garden City, N.Y. "Getting the diagnosis right can lead you to a successful solution."

Female pattern is the most common form of hair loss during menopause, and affects approximately one in three women during this time of their lives. While gradual hair loss is often the reason for the office visit, getting to the root cause is crucial.

Other common reasons for hair loss in menopausal women are low thyroid and hormone changes, according to Dr. Daly, who is board-certified in dermatology, pediatric dermatology and dermatopathology.

Hair loss Firm Wants Prince William As A Spokesman

Friday, December 31, 2010

Bosses at hair loss firm Rogaine are courting balding royal Prince William for a major new ad campaign.

The heads of the hair care company want the groom-to-be to become a spokesman for them - and they're sending him a basket of goodies ahead of his 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton in the hope he'll be suitably impressed.

A company spokesman tells Life & Style magazine, "We’ve been watching Prince William’s growing bald spot closely for years, and we believe Rogaine can help.

"We’d love to send him our new Unscented Men’s Rogaine Foam. William would be the perfect spokesman for Rogaine because whether you’re a prince or an average Joe, hereditary hair loss affects one in four men.

"When he’s on the altar and the world is looking at the back of his head, he won’t have to worry about the hair that’s not there."

Prince William is going bald

Tuesday, November 02, 2010

He's not the king of England yet, but Prince William might want to start wearing a crown anyway – to cover up his bald spot.

The handsome royal's ever-expanding bald spot was on display as he saluted sailors recently at a naval base in his naval uniform.

The 28-year-old prince's bald spot was first visible seven years ago when he turned 21, and his hair has continued to thin, the Daily Mail reports.

William takes after his father, Prince Charles, and uncle, Prince Edward, where hair is concerned, rather than mother Princess Diana – even though it's believed that male patterned baldness is inherited from the mom's side of the family.

"It's genetically inherited, but it can come from both sides of the family," said dermatologist Dr. Doris Day of Lenox Hill Hospital. "Even if no one in the family has thinning hair, it can be in the genes and still just show up."

There is good news and bad news for Prince William, Day said.

The bad news: the younger baldness begins, the more hair you'll lose. And the good news: "We have made great advancements in hair transplant technology, which is an option for all men," Day said. "And medications like Minoxidil and Propecia can also be effective for hair loss."

Hair combs that stimulate hair growth are available, too, and the topical medication, Rogaine, works 50 to 60% of the time, said Dr. Susan Weinkle, president-elect of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. "But Rogaine has to be used every single day," she adds. "So if the prince is flying a helicopter and forgets for a day, that's a problem."

Baldness drug works, but some have sexual problems

Monday, November 01, 2010

The widely used baldness drug finasteride (Propecia) indeed boosts hair growth in men, but some may develop sexual problems, according to a new analysis.

A review of recent research found that men with the most common form of baldness who took finasteride are more likely to experience an increase in hair count, and say they believe their hair is thicker. But approximately 1 in 80 also experience erectile dysfunction, according to the analysis published in the Archives of Dermatology.

However, men with sexual side effects were not more likely to stop taking the drug. "It seems that most men taking this drug really prefer to have hair," study author Dr. José Manuel Mella of the Hospital Alemán in Buenos Aires told Reuters Health.

Up to half of men will experience pattern hair loss - known clinically as androgenetic alopecia - by the age of 50. Finasteride works by blocking an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, the hormone responsible for hair loss.

Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of finasteride, which costs about $50 per month for a brand-name pill but less for a generic version. However, questions have remained over its potential side effects.

Rogaine for womens hair loss

Saturday, September 11, 2010

For years, only men were acknowledged when it came to hair thinning and hair loss, but now we know that hereditary hair thinning is almost as common for women. In fact, one in four women in the United States experiences hair thinning.

OK, so you suffer from something that nearly 30 million other women do. Small comfort? Now you can take control of the way your hair looks and regain control of how you feel.

Women's Rogaine is the first FDA-approved treatment clinically proven to regrow hair. Simply by applying it to your scalp once in the morning and once in the evening, this solution works to revitalize hair follicles in areas where you have thinning. Women's Rogaine can be used on permed or color-treated hair.

Generally, after just four months* you may begin to see new growth followed by a greater volume of hair. Rogaine contains the only FDA-approved ingredient clinically proven to regrow hair. For less than a dollar a day (that's probably less than a cup of your favorite coffee), you can bring about hair regrowth. No excuses — it's time to get started on the new you.

The Truth about Unproven Hair Loss Remedies

Tuesday, September 07, 2010

People often joke about whether they're having a good or bad hair day. The very concept of the "bad hair day" speaks to the role hair plays in many people's self-esteem.

This emphasis on hair in society is one reason why the market for hair loss products, even unproven ones, is so huge: Many people are desperate to prevent further hair loss and re-grow their hair.

Only two products: minoxidil (Rogaine®) and finasteride (Propecia®) have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for hair loss. But it seems like hundreds of products, including shampoos, hair sprays and vitamins, are said to play a role in preventing hair loss and/or re-growing hair.

People eager for an easy hair loss solution are often willing to give these products a try, and others may want to supplement their use of minoxidil or finasteride. Regardless, people are likely to wonder whether there is any research to support the claims of these other products, or if they're just quackery.

One of the reasons hair loss products can confuse consumers is that shampoos, for example, can be considered both cosmetics and drugs; the definition depends upon the product's intended use.

If a product is marketed to improve appearance, it is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces consumer protection laws. If a manufacturer claims that their product can re-grow hair, it should be considered a drug. While there is no approval process for cosmetics, the FDA has a rigorous drug approval process.

Womens grooming tips for thinning hair and hair loss

Thursday, September 02, 2010

Choosing The Right Products:

“For my clients with hair loss, I suggest Women’s ROGAINE®,” says Priano. It’s the ONLY brand FDA-approved to regrow hair in women.

“If you have thinning hair, there are many hair care and styling products that really help make hair appear thicker. Look for anything with a "V" that adds VOLUME to the hair (shampoo, conditioner, gel, mousse, cream, or spray),” says Priano. “However, Women’s ROGAINE® is the only product that is FDA-approved to regrow hair.”

When choosing a brush or comb for thinning hair, look for a wide tooth comb or plastic brush with rounded tips (despite popular belief, plastic with rounded tips is more gentle than sharp bristles.)

Choosing The Right Cut:

“There are different ways to cut and style your hair to help it appear thicker,” says Priano.

Layered cuts can add volume to your hair -- whether it’s curly, wavy or straight. Stick with minimal layers, rather than heavy ones that can look flat.

Consider cutting deep bangs to help mask thinning hair on the top of the head.

Try a zig-zag part and a “messy” style.

Remember, everyone’s hair is different, so work closely with your stylist for a look that fits you best.

August is the 10th Annual Hair Loss Awareness Month

Monday, August 23, 2010

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM:

“Typically we lose between 50 and 100 hairs per day, but a consistent loss of 150 or more hairs is considered significant,” says Dr. Robert Leonard. It is also important to note the difference between Hereditary Hair Loss and temporary hair loss (Telogen Effluvium), which can occur as a result of hormones, thyroid conditions and certain medications. With Telogen Effuluvium, hair will grow back on its own.

People may also mistake damaged hair (shedding split ends) for hair loss. “I ask my patients to run their fingers through their hair. If eight to ten hairs come out with the bulb attached, this may indicate excessive hair loss,” says Dr. Leonard.

At the first sign of hair loss, whether its thinning at the crown for men or a diffuse, all-over thinning on women, proper treatment will help restore what is being lost.

Minoxidil in hair growth items

Friday, July 30, 2010

Two products used by Beijing 101 Hair Consultants have been found to contain an undeclared western medicinal ingredient by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). These two products are labelled to "promote hair growth, reduce hair loss and improve blood circulation".

"Hair Growth Formula D-2653-B" and "Hair Growth Tonic E-0583-D" are regulated as Chinese Proprietary Medicines (CPM) and declared to contain natural herbs. Such products are not allowed to contain western medicinal ingredients or substances controlled under the Poisons Act.

However, one batch of "Hair Growth Formula D-2653-B" (B/N 20091201) and "Hair Growth Tonic E-0583-D" (B/N 20091201) were found to contain the western medicinal ingredient minoxidil during HSA's regular product quality sampling programme. The affected batches of the two products, which were manufactured by Beijing Zhangguang 101 Science & Technology Development Co. Ltd in Beijing, China, have been recalled from Beijing 101 haircare centres.

Minoxidil is classified as a pharmacy-only medicine and is used to treat hair loss. Some of the side effects of using topical preparations containing this medicine include rashes, skin irritation, itching and exacerbation of hair loss in susceptible individuals.

HSA urges those who have purchased the affected batch of the products to stop using them. Those who develop any unexpected reactions to these products are advised to seek medical advice.
