Is the Balding Economy Restoring?

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

When the economy is down, people struggle to afford the bare necessities. Hair transplant procedures are not at the top of the list despite the amazing results they provide. When the economy starts improving, people have more disposable income that allows them to opt for cosmetic procedures like hair restoration.

In a recent interview, John Kahen, M.D., the premier hair transplant surgeon at Beverly Hills Hair Restoration, spoke about the correlation between an improving economy and an upswing in hair transplants. Dr. Kahen said that more people are opting to have the procedure done now that the economy is improving. He noted that hair transplant surgeries have increased dramatically since a year ago.

This upsurge in procedures is an excellent sign that the economy is recovering. The number of hair transplants being performed is likely to keep rising along with the economy.

Many individuals need to consider the hair transplant cost before committing to having the procedure done. That's why an uptick in the number of procedures being performed by Beverly Hills Hair Restoration Surgeon, Dr. John Kahen, M.D. is a good indication that the economy is on the mend.

An improving economy is good news for men who suffer from hair loss. With things getting better overall, more men will be able to experience the increase in self-esteem and sense of personal satisfaction that comes from an improved hairline. People who have undergone the procedure know it is an excellent investment in their self-confidence and self-worth.

Hair Transplant Documentary

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Applicants required for new documentary about hair transplants.

Hopefully many of you know of me already as i've been around a while. A few things have happened to me over the last several months regarding getting info out there on a larger platform rather than just in the hair loss message forums, which has enabled me to get my hair loss mentor role mentioned within a few different circles.

Morgan Spurlock, who i met recently kindly put my information forward to a TV production company in the UK who produce his show (along with other shows such as 'Britains Next Top Model' )

Well, I have recently met with them and and had a good in depth discussion and the long/short of it is they want to make a serious informative piece on HT's and the industry generally.

So therefore i am reaching out to any guys here who might be willing to help. Is there anyone who is a repair patient or upcoming repair patient who would be willing to talk on camera about their experiences, physically and emotionally. Also are there any patients about to embark on the HT journey/process who would be prepared to speak on camera and be interviewed throughout the process ie. Pre op, 6 months post op, 12 months post op.

I intend to be part of the documentary too. If you are able to help and willing to speak on camera please send me an email at: support@spexhair.com as they ideally require a variety of patients to help with their documentary

This applies to anyone regardless of location around the world. If you are willing to be part of a HT education documentary please drop me a line ASAP.

Barber to undergo live hair transplant

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

People will have the chance to see a live hair transplant take place tomorrow.

Barber Andrew Icke, 38, will undergo the procedure at the Mapperley Park Clinic, in Mansfield Road, Carrington.

A strip of his scalp will be removed and cut into 2,500 pieces, which will then be transplanted back into the area of his head where the hair has thinned.

This is known as a strip-harvest procedure.

Mr Icke, who owns Blend Barbers, in Derby Road, Stapleford, suffered thinning and hair loss at an early age.

He said: "Losing my hair has always bothered me and wasn't something I was willing to just accept.

"I have been determined to find a solution and a way of restoring my hair and my confidence in my looks so I like what I see in the mirror – which, being a barber, I stand in front of all day.

"I decided on a hair transplant a couple of years ago and have been researching it ever since.

He added: "Baldness is still a bit of a taboo with men and treated as a joke, but it does affect us and my hope is that, through having the live transplant, people will learn about the procedure and consider it as an option for them."

The live hair transplant will take place as part of an open day at Mapperley Park Clinic, a private clinic which offers a range of treatments and procedures.

FDA-Approved NeoGraft Can Permanently Conceal Scars Caused by Strip Method Hair Transplants

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Shaft Medical San Diego, the area's premium aesthetic medicine practice providing the full range of advanced cosmetic procedures, announces the availability of the NeoGraft Hair Restoration California procedure for scar repair.

For balding or thinning hair there is now an effective solution. No painful recovery. No long downtime. NeoGraft California offers a revolution in hair restoration.

Now with NeoGraft, scars on the scalp are a thing of the past. Scar revision to repair a scar on the scalp as the result of past "strip" surgery hair transplants, scars from face lifts or any other injury to the scalp, is now possible. The old procedure to correct these obvious scars was to cut them out again with a scalpel, suture the scar back together and hope the scar does not spread again. However, with the new advanced technology of NeoGraft, scars can be permanently concealed by transplanting hair in to the area of concern. No scalpel, no sutures, no additional scars and no "hoping" for results. The hair transplanted to these areas grows forever.

Due to the challenges of the current job market, social relationship competition, and the aging baby boomer population affected by hair loss, hair restoration procedures and treatments are one of the fastest growing segments in the aesthetic industry. In the past, San Diego hair transplantation procedures were time intensive, invasive, and required specialized skills that were developed over time. NeoGraft is a revolutionary, FDA-approved automated hair transplant device. With NeoGraft hair restoration San Diego, hair is harvested one hair at a time from the back of the head without leaving the large linear scars associated with the strip method.

Samson Hair Restoration Announces Development of a Hair Transplant Video Library for Hair Transplant Procedures

Sunday, April 01, 2012

Samson Hair Restoration/Samson Hair Transplant announced today the development of a library of hair transplant videos explaining various aspects of hair loss and hair transplants. The purpose of the hair transplant videos is to help better inform people about the hair transplant procedures. The hair transplant videos will be short, approximately 2 -3 minutes in length, and cover specific topics that are commonly asked about among people considering hair transplants.

“We feel this hair transplant video library better suits the needs of people today who are researching for hairloss solutions, and hair transplants specifically. Many people and, in particular, younger people prefer videos to written materials and they want information that is quickly digestible. With this hair transplant series, people can research specific aspects that are of greatest interest to them by simply playing the videos,” commented William McCullough, President of Samson Hair Restoration/Samson Hair Transplant.

Another impetus behind the videos is to address much of the confusing information that exists about hair loss and hair transplants. Because hair transplants are fundamentally visual, much more information can be conveyed more quickly with a visual medium than with the printed word.

The hair transplant video library will feature a number of different speakers about hair transplants from Samson employees to physicians and some patients as well. The videos will be available for viewing on the Samson website at www.samsonhairrestoration.com as well as on YouTube. Samson Hair Restoration also has a gallery of before and after photos of many of their hair transplant patients on the website as well.

Cheap hair transplant could damage your scalp

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Want to get a hair transplant? Don’t get swayed by classifieds offering cheaper hair transplant procedures as they can cause permanent damage to your scalp, doctors warn.”The popularity of hair transplantation has seen a dramatic increase ever since celebrities have come out in the open declaring that they have undergone the procedure.

A lot of younger adults who are about to get married are also coming in for hair transplantation,” hair transplant surgeon Arvind Poswal told IANS. Currently there are three procedures available. The first one is FUT (follicular unit transplantation) or strip procedure, where hair is transplanted from the permanent zone, the area in the back and sides of the scalp where hair is more resistant to balding, to the bald or balding areas.

The second procedure is FUE (follicular unit extraction), which is a slower procedure involving the transplantation of 500-1,000 hair strands. The third procedure available is DHI (direct hair implantation), which is considered the most advanced technique.

While the strip procedure can cost anywhere between Rs.40,000 and Rs.50,000, the DHI procedure ranges from Rs.2 lakh to Rs.5 lakh. Newspapers and magazines are rife with advertisements offering cheap hair transplants at lower prices, but experts say blindly believing the ads is an invitation to disaster. ”A lot of complications can occur if the procedure is not done properly.

People often get affected by lucrative offers and end up paying more in the form of scars and bad results. A lot of scarring can occur in the front and back. Bleeding and infection may also occur,” said Viral Desai, a cosmetic and plastic surgeon based in Mumbai.

Samson Hair Restoration Announces Study of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Monday, March 19, 2012

Samson Hair Restoration announced today a study of the use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in hair transplant procedures. The study will be conducted in Samson’s Los Angeles and San Diego offices in conjunction with Cytomedix, Inc. of Gaithersburg, MD, a leader in the field of regenerative medicine. Cytomedix will supply the equipment and supplies to conduct the study. Samson will perform the procedures and follow the patients for several months afterwards to record the results.

Platelet rich plasma hair transplant procedures involve drawing blood from the patient, separating and concentrating the platelets through the use of a centrifuge, and then reintroducing the platelets to the patient in both the donor and recipient areas. Platelets contain growth factors that have been shown to significantly aid in healing.

The study, to be conducted by Samson’s Senior Surgeon, Dr. Carl Powell, is designed to investigate the specific benefits for hair transplant patients. “PRP has been used for a number of years in cosmetic surgery to reduce swelling, redness and speed healing. We’re hoping to see those benefits and others,” explained Dr. Powell. “With hair transplant procedures, the hair typically begins to grow around three months after the procedure. Hopefully, PRP will reduce that interval and get the hair growing much sooner, perhaps even right away,” continued Powell.

Hair Transplants for Eyelashes and Eyebrows

Friday, February 24, 2012

Why buy mascara when you can redo your eyelashes or eyebrows... with real hair?

Yes, hair restoration surgery to fill in thinning eyebrows or to enhance less-than-lush eyelashes is the latest trend in the quest for the aesthetic ideal.

According to statistics released from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), hair restoration procedures performed on the eyelashes, eyebrows and face increased 14.2% from 2008 to 2010.

Local expert Robert Leonard, MD

“An accident, injury, or simple genetics can lead to hair loss in very visible areas of the body other than the scalp,” said Dr. Robert Leonard, chief surgeon and founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, with offices in Cranston. "This can make someone self-conscious in both their personal and professional life. But, thanks to continued advancements in hair restoration surgery, hair loss can be corrected on almost any spot on the body.”

How to Avoid a Hair Transplant

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Internationally renowned hair restoration expert Dr. Alan J. Bauman will discuss new ways to prevent hair loss and restore hair growth using the latest non-invasive and minimally-invasive treatments.

How early a person spots thinning hair determines how much hair they save. Those who wait until the hair loss is visible to the naked eye are too late - 50 percent is already gone.

Nationally recognized hair restoration expert Alan J. Bauman, M.D. will be a featured presenter at the Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness Expo 2012 at the Miami Convention Center on Saturday, February 25. Dr. Bauman’s multimedia presentation “How to Avoid a Hair Transplant™” will discuss safe and effective medical therapies proven to protect, enhance and restore hair growth in men and women.

“Although hair transplant technology has improved significantly in recent years, our first goal is always non-surgical intervention,” said Bauman, a board-certified hair restoration surgeon who is recommended by the American Hair Loss Association. “The goal of this talk is to teach prospective patients about the abundance of preventative care treatments, from low level lasers to FDA approved medications and nutritional supplements and how to better understand the hair loss process, including the importance of meeting with a board-certified hair restoration physician.”

Following the presentation, Bauman and his medical staff at Bauman Medical Group will demonstrate new technologies to treat and prevent hair loss. Several of Bauman’s patients will also be at the expo to share their personal experiences with hair loss and hair restoration.

A New Approach to Treating Hair Loss

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

A new report highlights a novel way for doctors to replace thinning hairlines: transplanting leg hair.

The report, a study of two cases published in The Archives of Dermatology, describes a new procedure in which receding hairlines were restored by taking hair follicles from patients’ legs and grafting them to the head. Men’s leg hair had successfully been transplanted before to the back of the head, but these are believed to be the first documented cases of leg hair being used to restore the hairline.

The procedure has the potential to restore the hairlines of millions of men with male pattern baldness, the most common cause of hair loss and often an enormous source of stress. The condition, also called androgenic alopecia, typically begins at the hairline and eventually creates a horseshoe-shaped pattern of hair around the ears. It stems from a sensitivity — largely genetic — to the effects of hormones on hair follicles.

In traditional transplants, hair follicles are taken from an area that runs an inch or two above the ears and temples to the back of the head. Dermatologists can transplant follicles from this area – called the safe donor zone because hair follicles there are impervious to the hormones that cause hair loss – to the front of the head without worrying that the hair that grows from them will fall out. But hair that comes from the back of the head is typically much coarser than the fine hair that grows in front.

Robotic Hair Replacement The First Of Its Kind

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

For those concerned about hair loss, a new robot is helping to restore confidence one precise follicle at a time.

A new robot could help return hair to those of us who, as we get older, find ourselves a bit follically challenged. Called the Artas System from Restoration Robotics, it was recently approved by the FDA to help with a type of hair transplantation technique called follicular unit transplantation where follicular units, groups of one to four hairs, are removed directly from the back of the head and transplanted on the top and front.

Removing those units has always proved to be the toughest part of this method, but the robot changes that, which is why even Dr. Robert Bernstein - the man who's widely credited with developing follicular unit transplantation and extraction - jumped to be among the first in the U.S. to use the device.

"A follicular unit is about a half a millimeter and you have a one millimeter circle that has to go dead center over it to punch this out. So when you're doing it by eye and you're doing thousands of them over time you're missing them over time it's not exactly precise. The robot is dead center each time and follows the angle of the hair," explains Bernstein.

While the robot doesn't really have any direct impact on how the transplant will ultimately look - that's still up to the doctor's expertise and artistic skill. What it does do is give the doctor a better quality sample of hair with which to work.

High tech hair transplant

Thursday, February 16, 2012

You've seen the commercials for traditional hair transplants and the results look impressive. But the reality?

“They call it the strip method where they actually cut a chunk of your scalp up and then they got to sew it together which leaves you with a big nasty scar,” explains Roger Bassin, M.D., cosmetic surgeon at The Bassin Center for Plastic Surgery .

But now there's a much easier, less painful option. It's called the NeoGraft. First, a tiny tool is used to individually remove hairs and follicles.

“That is one millimeter that little punch and that heals overnight, so you're left with no scarring,” Dr. Bassin says.

Those hairs are prepped and then transplanted back into a patient's problem areas.

“It'll grow just like a natural hair,” Dr. Bassin says.

Close to 100 percent of the transplanted hairs survive, compared to just 70 percent with the traditional method.

Today Dave is hoping the NeoGraft will transform his hairline.

“It's been thinning on the top area which it never had before,” Dave says. “I felt it was time to do something before it got worse.”

Dr. Bassin says the results look more natural.

“It makes them feel better about themselves and if you feel better about yourself, really what better reward can you have than that?” Dr. Bassin says.

Hair Transplant Technologies: What Does the Chairman of the ASHRS Have to Say?

Thursday, February 02, 2012

There are many new technologies available for hair transplant surgeons today. But with so many technologies available and so many hair transplant surgeons claiming they have the best technology, how can one know which one is the best? The new chairman of the American Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ASHRS), Dr. Marco Barusco, gives his opinion on some of the latest and upcoming technological advances in this field.

HypoThermosol™Perhaps some of the most important technological advances are the ones dealing with tissue preservation. According to Dr. Barusco, once the donor hair is taken from the back of the head the clock starts ticking. "The quicker we re-attach the hair to the scalp the better the chance it will survive", Dr. Barusco said. Traditionally, surgeons have used regular saline solution to preserve the tissue, but HypoThermosol™ has been showing to have the best composition. It is easy to work with and preliminary observations suggest that it improves hair survival and overall results.

ACell™ACell™ is used for wound healing and hair growth. It is rich in growth factors and collagen. This technology significantly benefits the patient but given its high cost very few surgeons use this material. When a doctor uses ACell™ the donor area of the scalp heals better, leaving a smaller and thinner scar, and the transplants grow better.

Robotic SurgeryAlthough much buzz has been given to robotic hair transplant surgery, Dr. Barusco does not see it as a revolution but rather as another tool. The idea behind the robotic surgery is that a robot harvests hair automatically from the patient's donor area. The doctor and the team still need to perform the rest of the procedure.

Not Only Celebrities Get Hair Transplants

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Celebrities such as Louis Walsh, James Nesbitt and Wayne Rooney have all gone public about their hair transplants, but the truth is that thousands of ordinary men receive hair transplant surgery every year, usually without anyone ever knowing.

Hair Restoration Blackrock (HRBR), the hair transplant clinic which treated Louis Walsh and James Nesbitt, has just completed some interesting analysis of their 2011 patients. Last year HRBR saw in excess of 2000 regular men, as well as a few well known faces.

“Hair loss is a great leveller. While it may be celebrities who make the headlines, our average patients are men of all ages and from all walks of life. There is no doubt that when celebrities like Wayne Rooney and Louis Walsh go public, it helps de-stigmatise hair restoration surgery, which is something we greatly welcome.

As well as people from the entertainment industry and professionals, here at HRBR in both our London and Dublin clinics, we see a wide variety of men, which includes everyone from politicians and plumbers to postmen”. Hair loss can greatly affect a man’s self esteem and self image, be he in front of the camera or in front of a client, colleague, or partner.” said Dr. Maurice Collins, Medical Director and Founder of HRBR.

Commenting further Dr Collins said “It doesn’t surprise me at all to see business people ahead of actors and musicians from our 2011 patient list. Nor I am surprised to see students in the list. Students are the young professionals of tomorrow, this generation is more conscious than ever of the need to look one’s best and to look young”.
