Hair Loss Patients Getting Younger

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

About half of the patients who seek hospital treatment for hair loss are now in their 20s and 30s, a report finds. Analysis of health insurance hospital bills released by the National Health Insurance Corporation on Sunday shows that people in their 20s and 30s accounted for 48.4 percent of all 181,707 patients who received hair loss treatment in 2009.

The 46,090 patients in their 30s accounted for 25.3 percent, and the 41,914 in their 20s for 23.1 percent. Some 37,278 or 20.5 percent were in their 40s, and 21,046 or 11.6 percent in their 50s. Teens accounted for 18,390 or 10.1 percent.

Patients with alopecia areata, where small circular patches of hair fall out, topped the list with 137,000, followed by those with scarring alopecia (22,000) and those with androgenetic alopecia or male-pattern baldness (12,000).

Hair loss in young people is mainly caused by westernized eating habits and stress, experts said.

Narragansett Resident Leonard Receives Philosophy Award by Japanese Society of Clinical Hair Restoration

Monday, March 28, 2011

Dr. Robert Leonard, the founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, was presented the Philosophy Award by the Japanese Society of Clinical Hair Restoration for his strong commitment to practicing honorable medical ethics in his treatment of male and female patients with progressive hair loss.

“While this award is a great honor for me, I would like to express my deep, heartfelt condolences to the people of Japan affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami,” Dr. Leonard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time in your country’s history.”

At the recent 16th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Clinical Hair Restoration in Okinawa, Japan, Dr. Leonard addressed an audience of Japanese dermatologists, plastic surgeons and medical specialists about the importance of being honest and forthright when treating male and female patients dealing with hair loss. He stressed the emotional and financial investment that patients instill in those in the medical field, and reinforced the necessity of employing the highest personal and professional standards.

Dr. Leonard’s presentation also covered his approach to treating women with hair loss. According to Dr. Leonard, 30 million women in the United States have the condition of female pattern hair loss, and it is often misdiagnosed, under-diagnosed, and even improperly treated by some in the medical community. Female patients with this condition are often the most prone to experiencing a great deal of anxiety about losing their hair.

Bamboo helps fight baldness

Many think that bamboo helps only in the construction and paper industries. But what many do not know is that bamboo has a number of medicinal properties too.

Apart from it being a well known medicinal curative for stomach problems, which incidentally even animals know, bamboo helps in the regeneration of hair on the scalp. It is indeed a boon for those going bald.

Bamboo has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is also used in Ayurvedic and Unani preparations. Bamboo is used for a number of ailments ranging from simple tooth problems to venereal diseases like gonorrhea. It has been found to increase sperm count and reduce infertility.

Studies have shown that bamboo contains a number of minerals and vitamins. Ayurvedic and Unani doctors often prescribe bamboo, especially Bambusa arundinacea, for tuberculosis, leprosy and internal bleeding.

Hair loss medications can affect men's sexual health

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

A new study has shown that 5a-reductase inhibitors, commonly used to treat urinary problems in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and found in popular medications to treat hair loss, can produce, persistent erectile dysfunction (ED), depression and loss of libido, even after the medication has been discontinued.

Researchers, led by Abdulmaged M. Traish, of Boston University School of Medicine, examined data reported in various clinical studies from the available literature concerning the side effects of the 5 alpha reductase inhibitors, finasteride and dutasteride.

Prolonged adverse side effects on sexual function, such as ED, depression and diminished libido, were reported by a subset of men. Drug-related reduction in libido occurred in 4.2 pc and 1.8 pc of patients in the dutasteride and placebo groups, respectively. Reduced ejaculation and semen volume were also reported and in some patients, these drugs were associated with depression.

Lawsuit Blames Hair Loss Drug For Sexual Dysfunction And Mental Problems

Friday, March 04, 2011

A Connecticut law firm has filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck & Co. on behalf of men who have taken Propecia, a prescription drug that combats hair loss but, its critics say, can also cause severe side effects such as sexual dysfunction and mental impairment.

Attorney Edward Jazlowiecki of Bristol has joined two other firms, in New Jersey and New York, in filing the suit, which alleges that Merck has failed to fully disclose the serious side effects of Propecia and failed to adjust its warnings in the American market even after European regulators forced the company to carry a stronger warning label.

Propecia, which is also marketed under the brand name Proscar, was originally introduced to treat men with enlarged prostates, but it won FDA approval in 1997 for the treatment of male pattern hair loss after patients noticed its restorative powers with hair. The drug's active ingredient is finasteride, which can help reduce the levels of the substance on the scalp that leads to hair loss.

But in many men, Jazlowiecki said, finasteride also reduces sexual function and leads to mental and emotional symptoms like anxiety attacks and insomnia that do not go away years after men stop using the drug.

Even Celebrities Have A Bad Hair (Loss) Day

Friday, February 25, 2011

There is a lot of media at the moment around hair transplantation and what men can do if they are going a bit thin, with more and more celebrities accepting, talking about or hiding their hair loss problems and solutions.

Although hair loss in men is one of the most widely accepted forms of hair loss and most common – it is still a problem that causes major anxiety for most men (although the majority wont let on it bothers them!). A receding hairline or the arrival of a bald patch can have a dramatic effect on men's confidence and self-image. It’s something most men secretly 'fear' but hope will never actually occur.

After all, thinning hair and baldness is something that kids use to identify the elderly, despite the fact that the process can begin before 20 years of age!

A good head of hair is associated with youth, virility and attractiveness, so when hair loss occurs it can come as something of a shock.

Many men believe that if their father has a full head of hair, they’ll keep a good head of hair. But genetic hair loss is set by a predisposed combination determined by both sides of your family.

Avodart V's Propecia

Friday, February 18, 2011

Avodart/Dutasteride is very similar to Finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia. They both help reduce the amount of the male hormone, DHT, in the scalp area. However, Avodart/Dutasteride inhibits the activities of two types of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes. In contrast, Propecia (Finasteride) only inhibits one type. This makes Avodart/Dutasteride a supposedly more powerful and faster-acting weapon against hair loss than Finasteride.

Avodart V's Propecia: DHT hormone suppression

Effectiveness of Acodart/Dutasteride has been evaluated at different daily dosages, ranging from 0.5mg to 2.5mg and 5.0mg per day.

At a daily dosage of 2.5mg or 5.0mg, Avodart/Dutasteride suppresses close to 100% of DHT. This compares favourably with 5.0mg daily dosage of Propecia (Finasteride) which suppresses only 70% of DHT.

However Avodart/Dutasteride is very effective at small doses. At a daily dose of 0.5mg, DHT inhibition is close to 90%. Also, the level of DHT suppression is not significantly greater between 2.5mg and 5.0 mg.

Hair have a promotion

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

A recent study has revealed that high flying men and women are using Cosmetic Surgery to get ahead in their careers.

The survey showed that 30 per cent of female executives and 17 per cent of male execs have undergone various cosmetic surgery procedures to help boost their career prospects and gain confidence at work.

54 per cent of women and 50.6 per cent of men would consider having a cosmetic surgery treatment if it would guarantee them to get ahead in their jobs.

Popular male procedures included Hair Transplant Procedures. This accounted for 7.4 per cent of men asked.

Andrew Cooper, Chief Executive of Surgery-Network.Com said: “A huge number of men and women chose to undergo surgery to get ahead in their careers. With the recent newspaper coverage of Male Celebrities undergoing Hair Restoration Surgery this only reignites the interest they had previously and puts this back at the forefront of their thoughts.”

If someone feels down about the appearance of a certain part of their body such as their Hair Line, getting a day case Hair Restoration Treatment may dramatically change their mindset and give them the self confidence they need in order to achieve their personal goals in the work place and I can relate to this having personally undergone a Rhinoplasty to correct a lump on my nose and Laser Eye Surgery as I felt conscious wearing glasses every day

NeoGraft hair transplant featured on CBS 3 News with Dr. Paul Glat

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Hair transplants have come a long way in a few years. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Glat of SeaHair in Bala Cynwyd demonstrated the latest automated hair transplant procedure on T.V. last night, with a patient in his thirties who experienced hair loss starting at an early age.

The NeoGraft device eliminates the need to “harvest hairs” by cutting out a large area of scalp from the back of the head as is done in the conventional “strip” method, which leaves a large and unsightly linear scar.

Instead, the NeoGraft process uses a hand piece with small pneumatic punch device driven by air pressure to remove “follicular units” of hairs, which are gently withdrawn individually from the scalp and collected in a small chamber in the device, where they are kept moist and ready for re-implantation. (Hairs grow naturally in follicular units, or groupings of one to four hairs.)

The hair units are then implanted by gentle reverse air pressure through the device into tiny slits created in the scalp.

This procedure, known as “follicular unit extraction”, or FUE preserves the naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs in order to achieve a natural look after implantation in bald or thinning areas.

Since hairs are left in the donor areas to grow without leaving a large scar, hair can be worn as short as desired. Single hair units are used for implanting in the hairline areas, while multiple hair units are used to fill in the rest of the areas designated to receive the transplanted hairs.

"NeoGraft has completely changed the way we perform hair restoration,” says Dr. Glat. Before the NeoGraft device gained FDA clearance, the harvesting and implant procedures had to be done by hand, which meant that far fewer hairs could be transplanted in a day.

Current standards in the diagnostics and therapy of hair diseases - hair consultation

Tuesday, February 08, 2011

Hair and scalp diseases present an extensive diagnostic and therapeutic task.

Treating them is often a challenge for the physician in daily practice. Unclear diagnoses, chronic conditions with long-lasting therapies and the uncertainty of the patient may often lead to unsatisfying situations for both the patient as well as the doctor.

The complaints can be divided into

(1) hair loss

(2) increased hair growth

(3) abnormal hair quality

A structured history and the objectification of the clinical findings with the help of standardized diagnostic methods and score systems or classifications enable a diagnosis in most patients already at the first visit.

Moreover, such structured processes strengthen the treatment satisfaction and compliance of both the patient and the therapist. In the meantime, diagnostic measures and clinical practice guidelines are available for the most common hair disorders.

Expertise in basic psychosomatic care and an empathetic approach to the fears and concerns as well as practical advice for the daily contact with hair disorders should be integrated as separate elements in the management of hair diseases; in most cases they are gratefully welcomed by the patients.

Replying to questions by the press, Dr Tejinder Bhatti said that there is no scar with FUE technique and the person who has undergone hair transplantation can return to work the very next day.

Dr Alex Ginsburg is undoubtedly considered the pioneer of the FUE technique in the world. New hair transplant process eliminates scars; doctors among the first patients

Friday, February 04, 2011

A new device for transplanting hair eliminates the huge scar left in the back of the head in the conventional "STRIP" method of hair restoration.

The NeoGraft is effective for nearly all degrees of hair loss in a fast and minimally invasive procedure.

The results are a natural looking head of hair, which can be worn short if desired as there is no need to cut out a huge strip of scalp from the back of the person’s head in order to harvest hairs.

Dr. Ken Williams is one of the first physicians to be trained in hair restoration using the NeoGraft automated procedure. He was so confident with the technology that he had his surgical team transplant 4,500 grafts into his own scalp to restore his thinning hair.

Dr. Williams says his results are dramatic. "Up close with my hair worn shot, the look is very natural,” says Dr. Williams.

As an actual patient who underwent this procedure, Dr. Williams is committed to hair restoration surgery with NeoGraft.

Although “follicular unit” implants have been available for a number of years, before the NeoGraft device gained FDA clearance in 2009 the procedure had to be performed “by hand”.

This is a tedious process for both the patient and the doctor, which allows only a limited number of hair follicles to be harvested and transplanted in a single day. Patients often have to return for multiple sessions, making the procedure more expensive and more difficult.

HairMax LaserComb Clinical Trial Results in Females With Hair Loss Released at 2011 AAD Meeting

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Lexington Int’l, developer and manufacturer of the home use, laser phototherapy medical device the HairMax LaserComb, is pleased to announce the successful completion of a six month clinical research study on treatment of females with hereditary hair loss.

The HairMax is presently the only home use device on the market that has FDA Class 2 Clearance for marketing for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in males. The HairMax is also the only device of its kind to publish the results of the clinical study proving safety and efficacy in males in a peer-reviewed journal.

Clinical research studies on the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in females have traditionally been difficult to conduct, so this study was carefully designed.

The trial was designed as a double blind, multi-center, device controlled study in females, complied with Good Clinical Practice Guidelines (GCP), and was monitored by Palm Beach CRO (Contract Research Organization).

Evaluation of the results of the trial were conducted in a blinded manner so that the evaluator did not know if the subjects were using the HairMax or the Control Device.
