A new “Achilles’ heel” in fungus that causes dandruff

Friday, April 27, 2012

Research on the fungus that ranks as one cause of dandruff - the embarrassing nuisance that, by some accounts, afflicts half of humanity - is pointing scientists toward a much-needed new treatment for the condition's flaking and itching. The advance is the topic of a report in ACS' Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Claudiu T. Supuran and colleagues explain that dandruff involves an excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. In people without dandruff, it takes about 30 days for a crop of new skin cells to mature, die and shed.

In people with dandruff, it may take only 2-7 days. Irritation by the scalp-dwelling fungus Malassezia globosa (M. globosa) is one cause of dandruff. Shampoos and other dandruff treatments contain anti-fungal agents, but the authors say new medicines are badly needed since the two existing compounds are not very effective at preventing and treating dandruff.

In the quest for a better treatment, Supuran's group identified an enzyme in M. globosa that is essential for the fungus's growth.

Tests showed that sulfonamides, a family of existing antibiotic medicines, were more effective in preventing the fungus's growth than ketoconazole, a widely used anti-fungal medicine that is an ingredient in certain dandruff treatments.

As a result of the study, the scientists believe that the enzyme is a prime target for developing better anti-dandruff medicines.

Dating Is In the Details; Even a Flake of Dandruff Doesn't Go Unnoticed

Monday, March 26, 2012

Most women might think their mate can't tell a turtleneck from a tunic but it turns out that men do notice the little details. An AskMen survey of more than 2,000 men reveals that among other seemingly small snafus, dandruff ranks at the top of the turn-off list.

Other dating faux pas include excessive use of perfume, talking on the phone or texting while on a date and talking about ex-boyfriends. Some bad habits are hard to break, but NEW Suave® Scalp solutions can make it easy to fight flakes at least.

Men, women and stylists agree that dandruff is a common, and often taboo, hair concern. Many anti-dandruff shampoos help relieve flakes, but leave hair with a medicinal odor and lack-luster look. Suave® Scalp Solutions was developed with real women's - and men's - concerns in mind.

The line of shampoos and conditioners is not only clinically proven to fight flakes, but goes beyond with great fragrances and moisturizing ingredients. There is no need to compromise soft, shiny and beautifully fragrant hair when dealing with dandruff. Suave® Scalp Solutions gives hair the care it needs, and according to AskMen, can help relieve a once taboo topic, too.

"Flakes rank high on the list of grooming faux pas that men do not want to deal with in a relationship," AskMen Editor Elysha Krupp said. "More than 50 percent of men would rather clean the bathroom for a month than tell their girlfriend or wife that she has dandruff. Simply put, men are off-put by the dry, white stuff."

In fact:

Men Don't Dig Dandruff

Dandruff Downer: One out of three men admitted that dandruff has caused some discomfort in their relationship.**

Dandruff's a Chore: Cleaning the bathroom is one of many sacrifices men would make to avoid talking about dandruff. Nearly 30% of men would rather forego sex for a week than talk about flakes. Even video game lovers are willing to sacrifice their systems. One in four men admitted they would give up video games for a month to avoid the dandruff discussion.

Clue to male baldness discovered

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have identified an abnormal amount a protein called Prostaglandin D2 in the bald scalp of men with male pattern baldness, a discovery that may lead directly to new treatments for the most common cause of hair loss in men. In both human and animal models, researchers found that a prostaglandin known as PGD2 and its derivative, 15-dPGJ2, inhibit hair growth.

The PGD2-related inhibition occurred through a receptor called GPR44, which is a promising therapeutic target for androgenetic alopecia in both men and women with hair loss and thinning. The study is published in Science Translational Medicine.

Male pattern baldness strikes 8 of 10 men under 70 years old, and causes hair follicles to shrink and produce microscopic hairs, which grow for a shorter duration of time than normal follicles.

Researchers took an unbiased approach when scanning for potential biological causes of baldness, looking in scalp tissue from balding and non-bald spots from men with male pattern baldness and then corroborating findings in mouse models.

They found that levels of PGD2 were elevated in bald scalp tissue at levels 3 times greater than what was found in comparative haired scalp of men with androgenetic alopecia. When PGD2 was added to cultured hair follicles, PGD2-treated hair was significantly shortly, while PGD2's derivative, 15-dPGJ2, completely inhibited hair growth.

Tuesday, February 07, 2012

Rexona (Sure in the UK) and Clear, the deodorant and anti-dandruff brands owned by Unilever, are to sponsor British Formula 1 team Lotus in a multi-year deal.

The sponsorship uses the Rexona global brand identity as the Sure brand name is only used in the UK.

The Rexona and Clear brand logos will appear on the Lotus F1 Team's overalls and cars.

A marketing campaign to raise awareness of the sponsorships is currently in development and is expected to launch in time for this year's first F1 race in Australia, on 18 March.

The deal was brokered by sports marketing activation agency JMI.

Francois Renard, global brand vice-president for Clear, said the partnership will provide the brand's consumers with "the chance to see and live the winning impact that a high-efficacy, high-precision, high-performance brand like Clear Men" can offer them.

Pablo Gazzera, global brand vice-president for Rexona, believes the men's brand has a "perfect fit" with F1.

He said: "We tap into our consumers' passions – cars, sports, extreme adventure – in order to engage with them. The thrill of speed and fierce competition of Formula 1 racing falls right at the heart of what our consumers are passionate about."

Take a Natural Approach to Dandruff and Dry Scalp

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Dandruff affects about 3 percent of the U.S. population, ranging from infants and teenagers to adults with oilier skin.

Also known as seborrheic dermatitis, the relapsing, chronic and usually mild inflammatory skin condition can flare with stress or cold weather, and can be caused by fungal organisms such as those in the genus Malassezia.

Dandruff can manifest as dry or greasy, slightly itchy patches of skin with some white or yellow flaking. It occurs often on the scalp, eyebrows, forehead, the nose and lip areas, behind the ears, on the chest or in other folds of the body.

Although the cause for dandruff is not always obvious, naturopathic medicine often finds that problems in the skin are related to problems with digestion. For instance, in a 1971 study of 187 infants with the version of seborrheic dermatitis called cradle cap, 157 had symptoms clear completely within a week after allergenic foods were removed from their diet. All of these infants had recurrence of cradle cap lesions after the allergenic foods were reintroduced. To treat cradle cap today, breast-feeding mothers often are advised to avoid eating foods their babies are allergic to.

Dry scalp can also be related to food sensitivities, such as gluten intolerance, essential fatty deficiency or inadequate hydration. It can also be an early sign of dermatological conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.

Conventional treatment includes the use of topical corticosteroids and over-the-counter shampoos and gels, such as those with 2 percent ketoconazole or 1 percent metronidazole.

Tips to cure baldness, dandruff

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Recently, Lady Gaga joined the list of other celebrities to use anti-baldness cream as she feared she was losing more hair. It's not just who are possessive about their mane beauty. All of us fuss about hairstyle which is what makes one stand out.

Here are a few common hair-related problems we encounter and some tips to overcome them

Dandruff: Soak a few fenugreek (methi) seeds overnight in water and grind it to a fine paste in the morning. Apply the paste on the head for 30mins and wash off. This not just has cooling effect, but also keeps your hair dandruff-free.

Hair fall: Mix cocnut and gingelly (sesame) oil. Add an amla (gooseberry), a few leaves of white hibiscus and boil for 20mins. Let the mixture cool and apply this oil on your head and wash off after 20 mins. This will help prevent hair fall.

Grey hair: Soak henna in an iron vessel for at least 3 hours. Add sour curd and squeeze half a lemon to the paste and apply on the hair. Wash off after 2-3 hours. This will also keep the head cool.

Lack-luster hair: Take egg white and apply on the hair. Leave it for 30 mins and rinse with shampoo. Egg gives shine to the dull hair.

Brittle hair: If your hair is brittle due to over use of henna. Give your head an oil massage the day you wash the hair. This will not only enhance the hair colour, but also makes the hair smooth.

Study targets dandruff among black women

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Yolinda Washington's lifelong dandruff problem has been embarrassing, she said. "You want people to look at you, not your scalp."

She used to have her hair washed weekly at a salon. Between visits, she oiled her scalp daily. But nothing could rid her of the scaly white flakes that sat sometimes visibly on her scalp or shoulders.

She saw a brochure a few weeks ago on a study that aims to help black women who wrestle with dandruff. She joined a study under way at St. Louis University.

"Dandruff is a nuisance and affects people's lifestyles," said Dr. Jeaneen Chappell, a researcher and resident in dermatology at St. Louis University School of Medicine. "Social and economic ramifications can be great for individuals. It's not going to kill you, but it affects how you deal with other people, the clothes you wear, your confidence."

Chappell believes she has found a way to fight black women's dandruff, despite the unique issues they face.

"African-American hair is drier and doesn't produce as much oil as other races," Chappell said, "and it tends to be brittle and break if you wash it too often."

Many black women get their hair chemically relaxed and professionally styled. So they may only have their hair washed during a salon visit, Chappell said, which can be every two weeks.

SLU Studies Dandruff in African American women

Friday, June 03, 2011

Saint Louis University dermatology research fellow Jeaneen A. Chappell, M.D. is studying the comparative effectiveness of an anti-dandruff foam versus an anti-dandruff shampoo in African American women who wash their hair once a week or less.

"Dandruff is a common problem and it is possible that the most commonly prescribed treatment, an antifungal shampoo, is under-treating a certain population of women who do not wash their hair often enough for the medication to be effective," says Chappell. She says African American women may choose hairstyles that limit everyday hair washing and may be missing out on the full effect of dandruff-treating shampoos.

"The antifungal foam is a possible solution to this problem because it does not require patients to wash their hair and has the same active ingredient as the shampoo," she adds.

Up to 100 volunteers will be enrolled in the study. Participants must be African American women between 18 and 89 years old who wash their hair once weekly or less and have a problem with dandruff. They also must be willing to not grease their scalps for the duration of the study, although greasing the hair is allowed.

Those who participate in the trial must discontinue any previous over-the-counter or prescription dandruff treatments for two weeks prior to enrollment.

Is It Dandruff or Dermatitis?

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

Severe dandruff is actually a disease known as seborrheic dermatitis, which requires prescription medications.

See a doctor if you have:

Scalp irritation

Thick scale deposits despite regular use of dandruff shampoos

Yellowish crusting

Red patches, especially along the neckline

Severe cases of dandruff are caused by a disease called seborrhoeic eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis causes greasy, bran-like scale. The seborrhoeic area - the scalp, the skin around the nose, the lines on the cheeks, the eyebrows, the ears and the torso - may also be red and itchy.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis becomes worse during the winter and tends to improve during the summer when sunlight relieves the symptoms.

It can vary from mild cases, which are only a problem in winter, to more severe cases where flaking occurs in places other than just the scalp.
