Soy and Hair Loss

Monday, August 30, 2010

An American Herb company was recently issued a patent for the use of soy extract for the treatment and prevention of hair loss. Following are excerpts from the patent itself.

"The present invention is based on the principle that plants and plant extracts containing isoflavones can inhibit hair loss. Plants or plant extracts containing isoflavones can be administered either orally or topically to prevent hair loss.

The present invention provides the additional benefit that the administration of isoflavone-containing plants or plant extracts can provide other health benefits in addition to preventing hair loss. Another advantage of the invention is that the isoflavone-containing plants and plant extracts can be combined with other pharmaceutical treatments for preventing hair loss without adversely affecting the beneficial and positive effects of such treatments.""It is a further object of the invention to provide a method of preventing hair loss which may be used orally."

"The present invention is based on the principle that plants or plant extracts containing isoflavones may be administered orally or topically to prevent hair loss."

"The isoflavones of the present invention include those which exhibit estrogenic activity and which bind to testosterone receptors. Such isoflavones prevent the "hair loss" effect of testosterone by inhibiting the binding of testosterone to the hair and scalp receptor, thereby resulting in maintenance of scalp hair integrity."

Ne Yo's Teen Hair Loss

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Ne-Yo claims he wears hats all of the time to hide the fact he is losing his hair, which he says started to happen when he was just 13.

Ne-Yo started losing his hair when he was 13.

The 'Beautiful Monster' hit maker is known for wearing a hat but he originally decided to don headgear when he was a teenager to hide his receding hairline.

He said: "The men in my family start losing their hair really early on. My hair started receding when I was just 13. So that was why I originally started wearing hats. Then I got super-confident with who I am, but they were already part of my look, so the hats stayed."

Despite his love of headwear, Ne-Yo insists he doesn't have a "lucky" hat because it is hard to wear things more than once when you're in the public eye.

He explained: "That's the c**p thing about being a celebrity. Once you've worn something and someone's taken a picture of it, that's it. You can never wear it again. So I can't have a lucky hat, T-shirt or shoes."

Hair Loss Expert Says Elin Nordegren is not the Only One Losing Her Hair as a Result of Stress

Friday, August 27, 2010

World renowned hair loss expert, Dr. Larry Shapiro, announced the release of his new book, Fight Hair Loss and Win! and says that Elin Nordegren is not alone when it comes to hair loss as a result of stress. Shapiro says millions of women and men are experiencing the same and that heightened levels of stress, popular nutritional supplements, hormonal imbalances and many other unsuspecting factors are now linked to hair loss.

"Over the last few decades of observing and talking to thousands of patients, I became increasingly suspicious of certain supplements, lifestyle factors and hormones that contributed to their hair loss whether they were pre-genetically disposed to hair loss or not," said Dr. Shapiro, hair transplant surgeon. "I became so convinced that whey protein isolate was part of the problem, that I did my own study comparing different whey protein sources.

In his new book, Dr. Shapiro's addresses why whey protein isolate, a form of whey protein widely used in many weight loss products and meal replacement formulas causes a hormonal imbalance of testosterone. While this might be effective for muscle building, the side effect is hair loss due to the conversion of the spike in testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

"It makes perfect sense. Many of the FDA approved drug treatments for hair loss specifically target and block DHT receptors that cause hair to fall out," Shapiro added.

In addition, the book is chock full of practical tips on how to overcome and reverse hair loss that is caused by stress, which triggers a cascade of hormones that can wreak havoc on your hair follicles as is what most likely happened in Elin's case. "Here you have a perfectly healthy, young woman who has been under a great deal of stress. Her body reacted by creating a hormonal imbalance that triggered insomnia, weight loss and hair loss.

Hair loss and male menopause

Thursday, August 26, 2010

For years the term ‘midlife crisis’ has been used to describe issues that affect men as they get older. Many experts now believe that these issues attribute to a very real condition which has been labelled the ‘male menopause’.

It has been estimated this week that around 5 million men are suffering from the condition, male hypogonadism. The condition is believed to have many symptoms such as weight gain, lack of sex drive, and mood swings. Doctors also believe that baldness, and the occurence of bald patches, could also be affected by the condition.

“Prevalent disorder”

“This is a highly prevalent disorder”, said Urologist Dr Robert Brannigan of Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Unfortunately, we estimate that 95 per cent of cases are undiagnosed and therefore untreated. When ignored, symptoms can seriously disrupt one's quality of life”.

It is believed that the disorder is a direct result of a lack of testosterone that is being produced by middle aged men. The symptoms are certainly life changing for many men. This is particularly the case for many men who begin to lose their hair.

Hair InXs – A Revolutionary Approach to Hair

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Many women have experienced the trauma of thinning hair or more drastic hair loss. Research suggests that between 20-40% of women will suffer from hair loss at some point throughout their lives.

Based in Windsor, Hair INXS is both a hairdressing salon and a specialist in hair extensions and cosmetic hair replacement systems. At the heart of the salon’s practise, Hair INXS offers a ‘semi-permanent’ cosmetic hair replacement solution for women affected by the trauma of hair loss.

Female hair loss continues to be one of the last taboos and women who have lost their hair often feel isolated and too embarrassed to visit a hairdresser to discuss their problems. Though wigs and headscarves can serve to disguise the problem, many women feel uncomfortable wearing them and are looking for a more permanent hair replacement solution.

Common reasons for female hair loss include: alopecia, radiotherapy and chemotherapy following cancer or brain tumours, chemical damage, genetic thinning, female pattern baldness, lupus, trichotillomania and stress related conditions. Severity can range from noticeable thinning through to complete and permanent baldness and can affect women of all ages.

August is the 10th Annual Hair Loss Awareness Month

Monday, August 23, 2010

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM:

“Typically we lose between 50 and 100 hairs per day, but a consistent loss of 150 or more hairs is considered significant,” says Dr. Robert Leonard. It is also important to note the difference between Hereditary Hair Loss and temporary hair loss (Telogen Effluvium), which can occur as a result of hormones, thyroid conditions and certain medications. With Telogen Effuluvium, hair will grow back on its own.

People may also mistake damaged hair (shedding split ends) for hair loss. “I ask my patients to run their fingers through their hair. If eight to ten hairs come out with the bulb attached, this may indicate excessive hair loss,” says Dr. Leonard.

At the first sign of hair loss, whether its thinning at the crown for men or a diffuse, all-over thinning on women, proper treatment will help restore what is being lost.

Stem Cell Researchers May Have Found Baldness Cure

Saturday, August 21, 2010

Researchers working at the forefront of stem cell technology may also unexpectedly have come up with a cure for baldness.

They almost miraculously changed one cell type into a completely different one, but in the process ended up with skin cells complete with working hair follicles.

A treatment for baldness was not the goal when they started tinkering with cells from the thymus, a small but critical organ that helps run the body’s immune system to fight disease.

Rather, they wanted to see how stem cells from the thymus would perform if transplanted into growing skin as a way to help burns victims.

The research teams from Switzerland and Scotland were more than surprised when they transplanted thymus cells into the skin of lab rats. They discovered that the cells forgot they were from the thymus and began performing just like healthy skin cells.

“These cells really change track, expressing different genes and becoming more potent,” said lead researcher Prof Yann Barrandon, head of the stem cell lab at the University of Lausanne and the local Polytechnique.

The Best Selling Hair Thickener Products

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Hair thickeners are great for the job that they do. They do a good job in covering up hair loss but will never restore hair.

They can provide an impressive head of hair provided you have hair to start with. You cannot spray or shake fibres onto a bald scalp and expect to achieve a head of hair.

Anyone with intermediate hair loss, including men, women or children can use the products. Intermediate hair loss is when the scalp shows through in small bald or thinning areas.

Hair thickener products should not be applied directly to the scalp, this is when it starts to look false and will not produce impressive results.

The result when applied properly can be very impressive. Often people use the products only on special occasions such as at a wedding when they know that they will be photographed. A good hair thickener product can cover up your bald patch and make it appear normal.

NeoGraft Announces New Non-Surgical Treatment for Hair Loss and Thinning

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

NeoGraft Hair Restoration Center, Orange County's first dedicated automated Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair restoration office using NeoGraft™, proudly announces its acquisition of Harvest Technologies Corporation’s SmartPreP2 technology for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. The addition of PRP Therapy to OC NeoGraft Hair Restoration Center brings an advanced hair restoration treatment option for patients, especially female patients who would not consider hair surgery as an option for thinning hair or hair loss.

“PRP is the future for non-surgical based hair restoration for men and women. It utilizes the patient’s own healing cells and is a natural method to stimulate hair growth,” states Dr. Ken Williams of OC NeoGraft™. "PRP therapy will become the 'state-of-the-art technique' for the nonsurgical treatment of hair loss and thinning, especially in women who are not candidates for surgery. Most importantly, PRP is a natural method of stimulating hair cells to enter the growth stage of the hair cycle,” says Dr. Williams.

PRP therapy at OC NeoGraft Hair Restoration Center uses the new FDA approved device called SmartPrep 2 for harvesting PRP and autologous platelet concentrates. "PRP therapy is also used with other FDA approved medical treatments such as Minoxidil and DHT blockers for hair thinning and loss," says Dr. Williams. “As these new hair restoration technologies are available for patient use, OC NeoGraft is on the cutting edge of new science and technologies.”

Harvest Technologies SmartPrep 2™ redefines PRP systems by simultaneously delivering speed, flexibility, confidence, and dependable results, and by eliminating any variability. Hair Care Products Can Deliver The Goods For Thinning And Textured Hair

Sunday, August 08, 2010

Hair is considered a woman's "crowning glory," but women with thinning hair and those with curly, textured hair may face considerable challenges in keeping their hair looking its best. Fortunately, there are many different hair care products, or hair cosmetics, that can help conceal thinning hair and also keep textured hair in check.

At the American Academy of Dermatology's Summer Academy Meeting 2010 in Chicago, dermatologist Victoria Barbosa, MD, FAAD, assistant professor of dermatology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, discussed how certain hair cosmetics can improve the appearance of thinning and textured hair.

"Today, hair cosmetics are tailored for use with a variety of hair types, making it easy for consumers to select the most appropriate products," said Dr. Barbosa. "So whether your hair is thinning or thick and curly, there are many products that can address your individual hair care needs."

The Skinny on Making Thinning Hair Look Fuller

For women with thinning hair who do not want to resort to medical or surgical treatments, Dr. Barbosa offered several tips for selecting products that can make thinning hair look thicker.

British men fear going grey more than going bald, research claims

Thursday, August 05, 2010

One in two British men questioned for the poll said they were unhappy about going grey. From the age of 45 their preoccupation with getting grey hairs increases rapidly.

Forty per cent of men worry about hair loss or thinning hair.

The fifth major worry relates to having yellow teeth (30 per cent), according to the survey by consumer analysts Mintel.

Researchers say that, from the age of 45, men increasingly become more unhappy about their personal appearance.

Twenty-six per cent of men in the 45 to 54 age group said there were four aspects of their appearance that concerned them. This compares with an average of just over one in ten men 1(13 per cent) overall.

Altogether 2,000 men were questioned for the study.

Vivienne Rudd, Mintel's head of beauty research, said: "Although grey hair is traditionally seen as a mark of distinction in men, the reality is many men are unhappy with their newfound gravitas.

Hair Club Announces Preventative Tips and Hair Loss Solutions for Women

Wednesday, August 04, 2010

Hair loss is different for women than it is for men. Much more than their male counterparts, hair defines many things for a woman, whether it's personality, attractiveness, success, health or social status. When a woman loses her hair, very often she feels she's lost a major part of herself. That's why Hair Club® is announcing a range of hair loss solutions and preventative tips personalized especially for women.

To understand women's hair loss, it's important to first understand the causes. Hair loss can be temporary or long-lasting. One thing all hair loss has in common is that it is always a symptom of something else that's gone wrong in your body.

Some of the reasons women might be losing their hair include: hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, postpartum depression, stress, chemotherapy, as well as disorders such as Trichotillomania. Women's hair loss might also occur as a reaction to prescription medications, or the result of using harsh chemical relaxers and extremely tight braiding that can cause permanent damage to the hair follicle.

The most widespread hair loss among women is female pattern thinning, or Androgenetic Alopecia. This is a condition caused by a build-up of Dihydrotestosterone or DHT that eventually kills both the hair follicle and the hair itself. The hair follicle's resistance to DHT is genetic, so if there are members of your family with thinning hair, there's a good chance at some point you could experience the same.

If you are a woman and experiencing hair loss, there are some steps you can take on your own to slow down the progression of your loss of hair. While these tips won't help you re-grow your hair, they will help you keep the hair you still have.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia: to treat or not to treat?

Monday, August 02, 2010

BACKGROUND:

Published studies have evaluated a variety of therapeutic agents in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA); however, data on whether fibrosis is already established when the patients initially present are scarce.

OBJECTIVE:

To identify the prevalence of active disease in patients initially diagnosed with FFA and to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic agents suggested in the medical literature.

PATIENTS/METHODS:

Eighteen postmenopausal women with FFA presented at the outpatient clinic of our hospital from June 2003 to August 2007. Five patients who also presented with androgenetic alopecia were treated with finasteride 2.5 mg/d plus minoxidil 5% for 12 months.

One patient with a rapidly regressing disease received systemic corticosteroids. The remaining 12 patients were divided into two groups: 6 patients received topical clobetasol 0.05% solution once daily for 6 months and the rest received no treatment.

RESULTS:

Thirteen of 18 patients presented with stable disease. No significant improvement was observed in any of the patients.
